Thanks, Professor and Suki. And does the rising stars of manga actually have to be manga style? Because my style is more cutesy anthro animals. (Disney-like stuff) Here's a flash movie I recently finished. It's actually my first flash movie (hence the choppyness), I posted a topic about it before, but this time it's colored. And the jazz music was because I needed music or I lost points on my grade. (Yes, it was a school assignment... Webpage Design is the greatest class ever.)

Webpage Design is the greatest class ever.) Most aren't. And a lot of those get a book. Oh, they tend to throw in some manga-elements, like floofy backgrounds, but often it's their own thing. Mail Order Ninja and Sorcerers and Secretaries have more cartoony looks. Sea Princess Azuri uses some SD's and sea-themed romance backgrounds, but has a more solid style (and the characters are whale-flavored merfolk, so kinda husky). Van Von Hunter, My Cat Loki, and Dramacon are the closest to manga-style I've read that got an actual book. Divalicious is more cartoony (like the Archie comics almost), and Fool's Gold leans toward realism with no SD's that I can recall, with lots of details and outstanding costume design. Manga is really just a style of storytelling, if that. If you can draw sequential art and make a story out of it, you're eligible to enter no matter what you're style. A lot of purists dislike the OELs and think they're weak--which they might be, since it's a relatively new concept--and others dislike the variety of styles, but I love the varied storylines and plethora of artistic juices running around that place.

While we're on the subject, I'd like to ask something that I've never quite worked out. What is the actual definition of manga, and also what is the definition of anime? From what I understand there's a manga style, and then there's graphic novels that are called manga, and there's also something in this same style called anime... and that's just about all I know so far. @veg Hehe, I like that! Good timing and anticipation and sweet characters!

Manga= Japanese for Comics. Anime= Japanese for Cartoons.
In American dialect, it's come to mean comics and cartoons created in Japan, and those who mimic the typical style of either are using the manga or anime style. In creative sense, manga is a style of storytelling that's more cinematic than Western comic, and tends to be created at a certain size and using screentones of some kind rather than color.
It's really a very broad term. I could say that Surviving Maitown is a manga because I"m using the 5X7.5 inch page and tones, but I dont' draw the big-eyed look despite using some elements of manga for my story, such as emotive backgrounds and SDs. But I prefer to say I'm creating an Indie comic, because it really doesn't fit in any style category. It's my style that I developed by adopting techniques from anime, manga, Western comics, movies, tutorials, and various online and OEL artists that I admire.

Ah, thanks for explaining that. It's a lot clearer now. ^^ I wasn't aware of the screentones and page sizes, but that explains what's different about it to the usual Western comics.

No problem. ^^
Oh, length is a factor, too. Most comics are about 20 to 30 pages, while manga are about 6 times that.

Man, I should stop being so inconsistent with my forum visits...oh, well... Anyway...INTERVIEWS was epic, eh? Hmm...where can I watch it online? @ff Good to have you back, Professor! Having gained a busy schedule myself, I can understand not being able to post frequently (even after I found out that my school's network didn't forbid me from forums and the like). @suki's "Surviving Maitown" Sounds good so far...I'd probably be interested in a horror parody comic @what's up with me After finishing an essay, a fairy tale-based comic book, a Powerpoint, a presentation for an Italian Renaissance version of TIME Magazine, two final exams, a review of my work from my art teachers, and an end-of-semester party at a local hotel where I got drenched and later won a plushie wolf and a whoopee cushion, my new semester started this week, and with it came new academic AND artistic classes! I gets to learn printmaking! And figure drawing! And how to work with...METALS! *scurries off* [5 minutes later...] *from somewhere out of sight* AAAAAOOOOOWWW! MY LEG!

Whoa, you've been busy! Those artistic classes sound pretty cool. Oh, and if you want to see INTERVIEWS there are some download links in the KND Main section. I think one or two people have uploaded it to Livevideo too, if you'd prefer that.

You gotta show us some of your assignments.
WOO! I'm in a good mood today. Went to the dentist and this other doctor said I only need 4 teeth filled, and the others might not get worse if I floss properly. He was filling the 2 on top today and found a third one, and filled that one for free.

You gotta show us some of your assignments. Well, I just started on the first major assignments for this semester... ...but here's a few from last semester's art classes to satisfy you, which I'd already photographed for image documentation. img207.imageshack.us/img207/9764/junktreesed3.jpg (We had to make art out of trash - for these goofy-looking trees, I used plastic bags, wrappers, plastic bottles, a can of Sprite Zero, and scrap paper) img183.imageshack.us/img183/7698/panoramads2.jpg (I went into EXTREME detail for this one...) img177.imageshack.us/img177/7076/sixlogosbq1.jpg (A little backstory behind this one - we were assigned to create a company name using two letters we drew out of cup. I got "X" and "Z", and ended up with the name Xmas Zombies. This is the logo for that made-up company) I also made, for one of my academic classes, a 30-page comic book version of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Snow Queen". I recommend you read the original tale first, to get a sense of the context, but make sure you have some time on your hands - it's pretty long for a fairy tale. Here's seven pages I think turned out the best... Page 1, Page 3, Page 6, Page 10, Page 19, Page 24, Page 28Hey, you asked for assignments.

Hah. That's one wacky assignment.
Whoa, you sure did go into detail. O.o So many books...
That's a pretty cute logo. I like the title. Sounds like a B movie.
I'm impressed. ^^
My toes are cold. ><

Holy crud, you have serious talent! That sure is a creative way to make tree sculptures, and the second assignment looks like it took a heck of a long time (yup, definitely extreme detail there), but that hard work certainly paid off. Funky logo, I love that zigzagness. ;D And the comic looks great, you have a really cool cartoon style!

@agb Wow, you are good at this stuff. Why does everyone's school sound cooler than mine? @re: INTERVIEWS Holy...son of a... ... whoa.Serves me right for underestimating Mr. W's ability to blindside me. Good episode. And, uh, also: 2/5 is CANON?!? Can it be? We...won? I do believe mango smoothies are in order!

Yeah, I was surprised too! I mean, while I liked 2/5, I didn't expect it to actually happen. Pleasant surprise, I guess. *eats pineapple off the straw of mango smoothie*
But you just found out about this? So you didn't read the spoilers like most of us did. Congrats!

@ff
Even with all the hints throughout the series, none of us thought 2/5 would ever be canon. We were all shocked when we saw the spoilers...
@agb
Nice job on all those projects!
