"BUT---BUT, OKASAN---" "It's only for a month, kurei ko. We will be back soon." Kuki wiped tears from her eyes. "But....but I love it in Cleaveland! And I'll be lonely if we go to Nihon! I don't have any friends there....." Genki Sanban sighed. Every year, she had promised the family they would visit Japan. But lately, Kuki had become so attached to America that she never wanted to go. Osaka was the land where she was born.....but Kuki felt her real home was with her friends. "daijoubu, Kuki chan. You may bring one of your tomodachi with us." Kuki's face lit up. "REALLY?" Kuki embraced her mother. "Domo arigato gozaimasu." She said and ran out the door to get a friend. Genki shook her head and smiled. Kani Sanban, Genki's husband, had heard the conversation. He laughed. "Kanojo wa ureshii," he said. "Kore wa yoroshii." Genki nodded with acceptance. "It is good that she is happy. We are very blessed to have such pleasing children like Kuki and Mushi chan in our home." Kani nodded. Sometimes, he felt strange about the fact that his wife always spoke English, even just with him, but he had to understand that she wanted to fit in. The Sanban family was different than most, but they were still loving and happy.
"WALLY KUN!" Kuki called outside Walabee Beatles' door. Walabee was one of Kuki's closest friends. In fact, Walabee was Kuki's FIRST friend. He had helped her study English and make more friends. She was very grateful to have him.
Walabee poked his head out. "Wha's kun?" he asked. Walabee was Austrailian, and didn't understand most Japanese words or phrases. "It's a Japanese term of endearment in the masculine form," Kuki responded. She sounded a lot more intellegent when she was explaining Japanese grammar. "The reason I said it is......is.......well.......I dunno how to say this......DO YOU WANNA COME TO JAPAN WITH ME?" Walabee didn't know what to say. "Fer......ferevuh?" "No, you silly! Just for a month! It'll be fun!" "Ahll have ta ask....bu'......I'd love to!"
Kuki laughed in happiness. "YAY! If you can come, meet me at the airport, 6:00 at night. SAYONORA!" Right there, Kuki thought she was the luckiest girl in the world.
But not as much so as Walabee.

Chapter 2:
_____________________________________________________
Wally stood in the airport, his hands shaking with excitement. 'Ah still can't believe mum an' dad let me go to thuh othuh side of thuh world with Kuki's family....' he thought to himself. 'Bu' it IS gonna be just us.....' the Austrailian boy suddenly felt a rush of happiness. Just him and Kuki.....all alone.......with NO interruptions.......perfect.
"WALLY KUN!" Walabee turned around to see Kuki waving wildly. Beside her was Mushi talking to King Sandy, a little boy who had tried to marry Kuki but later took a shining to her younger sister. The two little children looked at Walabee and laughed. Kuki rolled her eyes at them. "They're just being stupid 'cause they think we're.........like......ummm..........dating," she said, blushing a little. Walabee managed a laugh. "Tha' IS stupid...." he said, blushing along with Kuki.
Then, Walabee heard Kani's voice. He was yelling something in Japanese....it sounded like a question. Kuki grunted. "Wha' was tha' grunt fer?" Walabee asked with surprise. Kuki suddenly burst out laughing. "I DIDN'T GRUNT, WALLY! I SAID YES! We gotta go on the plane now, anyway. It's a loooong trip. Last time it took us two days to get there 'cause our flight kept stopping. We stayed in China for a bit, two. Luckily otosan knows Chinese, so we got by pretty well." Walabee had a bit of a hard time taking in all this information, but understood that they had to leave. He followed Kuki to a fast looking plane that seemed luxurious.
When he got in the plane, Wally was amazed. "Are we travellin' first class?" he asked. Kuki nodded happily. "We've been saving up," she said. "I've never done it before." The blonde boy settled down in a seat by Kuki as the plane took off. He looked up at an airplane safety film that said something first in English, then in French, then in Japanese. He huffed and looked over at Kuki. She was laughing. "Wha'?" Wally asked. "THIS FILM HAS SUCH HORRIBLE JAPANESE GRAMMAR!" she yelled. "IT'S HILARIOUS!" Walabee tried to laugh too, but he coudln't. How could he enjoy Japan if he didn't know its culture, or even PART of its language?
It was nightime. A day on a plane could be exceedingly tiring, even though it's just sitting there and eating and talking. Kuki was already asleep. Before she prepared her makeshift bed, she told Walabee all about Japan and her sisters there. Kuki had a lot of sisters. Five of them, four living in Japan. Kuki also told Walabee that she would soon have a new sibling. "I hope it's a boy," she had said. "Otosan wanted a son so badly, and he got six daughters." she laughed a bit, then got her bed ready and fell asleep.
Walabee thought and thought. Would he really like Japan? Would Kuki have to translate for him? Would people think he was weird.....or rude.....or even stupid? He had never been too smart, but if he just stared when people talked to him.....well........
The small Aussie sighed. 'Maybe ahm wrong,' he thought. 'Maybe Japan won' be so bad aftuh all.'
And with that, Walabee fell asleep.

WELL NEVER FEAR, FOR CHAPTER 3 IS HERE! ______________________________________________________ Walabee opened his eyes and found himself in a bed he'd never seen before. Kuki stared down at him, her bluish glowing eyes shaking with anger. Wait.....anger? "WALLY KUN, WE HAD TO CARRY YOU OFF THE PLANE! NOT ONLY THAT, BUT YOU MADE MY BIG SISTER GIVE YOU HER BED! AND SHE MOVED TO HIROSHIMA, SO WE'RE NOT IN OSAKA AFTER ALL! I AM SO MAD AT YOU--" Kuki sighed. "Oh, forget it. Look, next time, just wake up, okay? You caused a lot of delay.....but I guess that doesn't give me the right to yell. I'm just really stressed about this change of plans thing..." Walabee had never seen Kuki so.....mature. He had always seen her lost in her own world. Maybe Kuki was more attached to Japan than Wally thought. "Wally.......I'll give you a tour around the house later. Right now, I wanna show you something really special." "Special?" Walabee asked. Kuki nodded quickly. "Come on, I'll show you!" Walabee ran out the door after his friend. "KUKI, WAIT!" the Japanese girl was going to fast. "IT'S REALLY FAR FROM HERE, WALLY, AND I WANNA GET THERE BEFORE PEOPLE CROWD AROUND IT!" "WHA' IS IT?" "YOU'LL SEEEE!" Walabee followed Kuki down to a giant park. "Welcome," Kuki said, out of breath, "To the Hiroshima peace park." Walabee stopped for a few seconds to get some of his energy back, then got up and looked around. As he scanned the park, something caught his eye.......... "Kuki.......wha's tha'?" Kuki looked in the direction Walabee was pointing. She smiled. "Oh, that? That's the...." "Sadako Sasaki peace monument, dedicated to all the children effected by the great atom bomb explosion." Kuki sharply turned her head towards the Japanese accented voice. Before her she saw a boy with neat pitch black hair and deep blue eyes. He wore glasses, a white shirt, and blue pants that went down to the knee. He had a comforting smile across his face and he was looking at the statue with great pride. Walabee rolled his eyes at the boy. "Wha' a nerd." He mumbled. A look of pure anger spread across Kuki's face. "WALLY KUN!" she yelled. The boy laughed. "It is alright. There is no need for politeness. What is life without fun?" he extended his hand. "My name is Kenji Aisu." Kenji bowed. "I see you speak English....it's always been an intrest of mine." Kuki smiled widely. "Oh, me too! I speak English even better than Japanese!" Kenji wore the warming smile once more. "It is the same with me. I am much more comfotable speaking English---it is so strange." Kuki giggled. "You're not alone," she said. "I'm Kuki Sanban." "That is a most beautiful name," Kenji said. "I have never heard one like it." Kuki blushed and giggled harder. "Wow.........most people make fun of my name.......hijimemashite." Kenji winked. "It is nice to meet you as well. It seems so wonderful to meet a new friend in front of the peace monument." Kuki's eyes sparkled. "Oh.......oh yes......it's so.......so..........romantic.......I mean, uh--" Kenji did more laughing. "No, it is quite romantic, actually. I wonder if Sadako brought us together......" "Sadako chan is my idol," Kuki said with awe. Kenji nodded. "She is worthy of such a title, I agree." Walabee couldn't listen to the conversation any longer. Kuki seemed to be so much more interested in this Kenji guy than she was in him. But.........but they had known each other so long.............Wally looked at Kuki. Her face was deep red and she was trembling. She giggled at every word Kenji said. Walabee couldn't believe it..........it couldn't be happening.......... Kuki Sanban was in love. ________________________________________________________ YAAAAAAAAAAAAY KENJI KUN!
