Yea really. I mean, I've never seen a fandom so romance-crazy.... there's more romance discussion here than there is for shows that actually ARE rather romance-intense. Even the Ranma 1/2 fandoms don't tend to focus all that much on couple discussions, and one-fourth of that show IS the various love triangles and romances!
Which leads me to what I think it's really all about.
First of all, Kids Next Door, as it is, has barely any romance in it, which I think causes people to see that as a sort of void they can fill with their imaginations.
Secondly, Kids Next Door stars, well, little kids. This I think means three things:
1. Obviously, there's the "adorable" factor of pre-teen romances.
2. Pre-Teen romances have basically, never happened in a cartoon before (or if they have, they've usually been rather straightforeward and with little room for arguement--Rainbow Brite and Brian, for example), whereas teenage and adult romances are a dime a dozen. This gives KND romances a sort of novelty (even despite that most fanfics tend to give the kids teenager-like personalities anyway...)
3. As well, there's a whole flipping lot of flexibility. We can make guesses about how a pre-teen romance would go, but the fact is not many people really know for sure how things work in the world of the pre-teen. We have our stereotypes, sure, but kids are MUCH more individualized than adults and won't adhere as strictly to a formula. Things could fly against the grain easily. Moreover, the fact that they are kids allows for the possibility that love interests could change at the drop of the hat, which makes it easier for shippers to pair up their favorite couples.
Finally, there's of course the personal aspects. Most of the people on this forum either are young, or we tend to think of youth as being better than it really is. In a way, when we ship, at least half of us are actually saying that we most closely identify with Character A and would love to get together with Character B, and of course its a cute/fun "puppy" romance, free of the ideas and stigmas that adulthood forces us to percieve. The cigar is just a cigar.
Anyway, that's how I see it.

I agree with every word said by JamesEightBitStar. From myself, I'd only like to add, that in fact not many cartoon characters manage to develop actual personalities. Ususally they're simple, flat and have not more than one are two specific features. This character talks with a funny accent, this one is very smart, this one is very stupid, etc. The Kids Next Door are multidimensional, they are emotionally complex, they even change, evolve and all this is shown in a very subtle way. This makes them seem very real and they also interfere with eachother in a very realistic way. All this allows the fans to identify with the characters most matching their own personality. The effect is that we don't watch C:KND just as a funny cartoon, but also start following it like a soap-opera

indeed digugirl02. Besides, its pretty obivous when we watch the shows and see them do or say stuff that causes the romance plotting of us crazed KND fans

I agree with everything you said, James. Sure, i have a favorite couple, but I don't go crazy over it and talk about it all the time. (not that it's something offensive) KND doesn't show much of really serious relationships, but it won't hurt if we like to talk about them once in a while. ;D

What Numbuh 16 said.
1) It's FUN. Biggest reason why I ship.
2) Mr. W made it part of the show.

Yeah, this is the only fandom where I actually ship a couple. And yes, Mr W has made it part of the show. Although there's nowhere near as much canon proof as you may think (by looking at the size of the romance board) lots of entertaining and mysterious hints are dropped, and that's what I like. Besides, I'm not very romantic at all, and since I'm entertained by romance in this show then it must be good!

Yeah, this is the only fandom where I actually ship a couple. Same here!! And I think it's one of the best experiences I had. I get to meet a lot of very great people. True. A little romance won't hurt. And it DOES add a 'spice' to the show!! Again, same here!! Actually, there's nothing wrong with being crazy over a couple or not. ;D If it's fun, then go!! If you find it uh.. 'not good' then, just leave it be.

What do you all mean by shipper and ship? I'm stupid

It means you support a couple and it usually includes having pictures of that couple in your avatar and sig and stuff (e.g. guess which couple I ship!). Oh, and also if you ship a couple then you're likely to make fanart and fanfiction about it too. So basically, Spankulot, if there's one particular couple you really like you could ship it!

What do you all mean by shipper and ship? I'm stupid "ship" is shorthand for "relationship," so a "shipper" is someone who supports a romantic relationship.
