I once had a discussion with someone, who explained to me this theory that fan-couplings happen because you, the shipper, personally would like to date Character A, and also because you subconsciously identify with Character B. In short, if you're a girl and you like Kuki/Wally, you feel like you're a lot like Kuki, and you have a crush on Wally, so you ship Kuki and Wally. Or something like that.

Well you guys basically figured the whole thing out. I think the reason people go crazy with couples in this show is because there's so many different combinations you can do....there are so many characters and aside from 3/4 the show doesn't really hint to certain couples like other shows. You've got some proof for this couple and more proof for another couple, and people's immaginations just go wild.
That's what it seems like to me anyways...

You summed it up perfectly. The human imagination is unrestrained, and people like to come up with off-the-wall ideas every once in a while, or otherwise go with what they think makes sense.
People get attached to their couples because it ties into what their creativity, and what they believe is 'love'. When you question someone's ship, you sometimes inadvertantly question interlying beliefs.
