About the Republican/Democrat thing - Romania has two social-democrat parties (<-), one liberal (->), one Greater Romania party (<<<-), a Conservatory party, a New Generation party led by the only man who drives his Maybach and so on... Two parties, one left and one right, are the best way to do so. I partly agree with J8BS (lazy me) but it depends on the teachers. And math makes your thinking much more efficient. I don't know about other school systems, but this is a little comparative study.
European education-------------Romanian education Low knowledge level required--High level required Educated people work in the country - work abroad. Strict passing requirements - nah... Practical knowledge for a good life - knowledge for a good life which isn't good Budget of 6% of the national funds - 3,9% increased to 5% after a one-week strike.
I once hated Americans for believing they're Gods. I exagerated, and right now I only dislike GWB. I like school because I like my teachers but I'm not brainwashed. And 20% of the RO-schooled have results and most of them go somewhere else thanks to the postcommunist economy. And let's not forget. Historia magistrae vitae. My teachers brainwash me so that only the best of the thoughts come out. Depends on place.

While I agree with JamesEightBitStar insofar as the school, as he descirbed it, is a brainwashing facility with all the charm of a Russian gulag I have to point out that MY school was nothing like that.
We studied mostly science and math with a healthy helping of general culture subjects (Philosophy, Psychology, History, etc.) and lanugages (Serbian, English, German/French and Latin). No brainwashing. None. In fact, math and science make you extra resistant to any such thing as they teach you more powerful methods and basic intellectual honesty. And when you get to philosophy you are basicaly immune to all brainwashing (I used to amuse my mother by pointing out, in deadpan, all the logical fallacies and sophisms in the evening news) as your ability to preform verbal reasoning increases tenfold.
I often disagreed with HOW precisely our school went about teaching us those very things (and, in fact, I can spit out long vociferous and venomous diatribes on the stupidity of schools, teachers and other lower forms of life) and, indeed, always disagreed with how our school enforced its discipline (I don't bother with diatribes in this case, I just curse, loudly and colourfully) but I never doubted the fundamental soundness of the idea. Knowing things is Good.
Of course, I don't advocate that you should all become cookie-cutter (mmmm....cookies ;D ) copies of the school's conception of an 'ideal you', learning things on your own is an essential part of becoming an actual person, but refusing to use already provided opportunities for study is just, well, dumb. If you'll pardon the expression.
And to those that feel that they are wasting their time in school, learning nothing, please just hang in there. University is way cooler than you might think (provided, of course, you really like learning stuff).

That sounds more like an excuse for people to waste their time on the internet. I completely disagree. I've learned plenty on the Internet for the last 4 months. I haven't learned a damn thing in school since day 1. Ditto. All I've basically learned at school is how to do y= in a math problem. ooooh BIG WOOPO! Everything else is basically review...

I learned the kind of useless stuf I normally only learn off the internet today. It was about Fermat's Last Theorum, and whether it was Phillipino or Phillipini.

Speaking of Maths, where I live, two theorems, Menelaos and Ceva are not covered by school, but are required by contests. Good thing I know them.

I don't need the Internet to know the world is full of idiots. I learn that from school. (my classmates=complete idiots). Rock can be satanic, but most of the time isn't. And sorry, but if you've dropped school in the fourth grade, you can get like this guy's wife.

But I frequently browse sites such as deviantart, which may cause heavy brain cell loss.

Well, grades are no problem for me. I can get the lessons from class, and thus, I'm every teacher's friend.
My history teacher (History is one of my favourite subjects) is going to buy a computer and is asking me for advice.

Every teachers friend...? thats weird...well because nobody really make friends with teachers....I like some teachers but I'm not their mates.
a student giving the teacher advice...? Then again I'm good at computers and the teacher asks me for help sometimes or other students. I'm quite popular. =)

In fact, the principal relies on me. I was the student who helped configure the school's new computers. And in January, at an English test, I'm making the base of it in Microsoft Access. Not the questions, though.
