So don't be so quick to judge parents who HAVE given their kids Benadryl as a last resort to help them get to sleep. Nobody did, did they? Just said it wasn't the only way.

Of course it's not the only way. But just try to imagine trying to calm down a child who's been running on overdrive all day and keeps getting out of bed every few minutes for a two or three hour time period.
I guarantee even the most together of people would feel frazzled.

@re: 'drugging' children
I hate using loaded terms. They cloud the issue. Administering some medical preparation is hardly on the level of shooting the kid with a tranq dart.
However, I would never give my child anything with more punch than an aspirin[1] before consulting a pediatrician. Children's bodies are tricky things and I don't feel educated enough to make reasoned judgments about which drug to use.
So I'm on the side of the mother. The airline has absolutely no authority to dispense medical directives and no right to require compliance. They should be sued.
I was hyperactive as a kid -- hardly ever sleeping more than six hours a day -- I am quite fortunate that my parents did not resort to sedation.
[1] Actually wouldn't even administer an aspirin. Those are really bad for your stomach lining. Paracetamol's fine, though.

Aspirin isn't much good for much of anything. I used to take it for headaches. It never worked.
Eating chicken soup usually has better results.
