Man, that sucks, because I recorded both Maurice and Love/Couch on a new "Season 5" tape; I already took the tab out of my Season 4 tape after recording SNOWING... I'm not sure there's enough room to fit three more eps in that one, though. (I put a little tissue inside that little hole thingy to get around the write-protection.)

I thought that Season 4 episodes were the shortest because the last episode of Season 3 was GRADUATES, and the end of the seasons usually have a full-length episode.

It's tough to figure. Not all seasons have the same number of episodes. While it may have started with 13 per season, as shows gain popularity companies order more eps to be produced per season. Unless you know precisely how many eps were ordered per season (or know the productions codes of every ep) I think the best way is simply to just make your own decision about what feels "right" as a premiere/finale for each season and leave it at that (until season DVDs comes out and the order is clearly established ^__~)
