I would give hardest and pitiful their own threads but since there aren't many gamers on this board I think it'd be best they are on a single thread.
So who/what, in your opinion, are the toughest and/or most pitiful bosses you have ever encountered?
I'll name the toughest first. All these are final bosses.
- Final Fantasy 5's end boss. If your HP isn't somewhere like 2000 and don't have good status-preventing accessories, then you are gonna find this battle near-impossible to survive, especially without using Safe, Shell, and Haste.
- Wild Arms 3's end boss. Not really too difficult (until the last forms, especially the last-last one) but this dude is quite possibly the longest final boss in RPG history, followed by that guy in Legend of Dragoon. I mean, it has ELEVEN forms, not to mention you have to fight some other boss twice beforehand!
And it doesn't help that the ending and the story overall (way too much "plot twists" that don't make too much sense, the main villian changed many times, etc.). So as you can see I was quite disappointed. -_-
- Every final boss in Saga Frontier except the one in Red's story. I've seen some cheap bosses in my history of gaming, but these guys take the cake.
Now for the most pitiful bosses. These are end bosses as well.
- Final Fantasy 6. The bosses before him can be tough, but the big guy himself... No. Especially when you're at levels higher than 50.
- Wild Arms 1. The only real attack you have to worry about is the one that shoots a red laser. Otherwise, he's just... (shakes his head)
- Grandia 1, its second form. The easiest end boss ever! All he does is lowly status attacks, of which my equipment nullified, and Level 1 magic attacks (less likely to use) which barely scratched me. I just set it so my characters use only normal attacks, and sat and watch.

Oooo, a video games thread! Anyway.. Bowser from Super Mario Bros 3. He moves FAST and sometimes you have to deal with dodging two of his attacks at once... and unless you've got the fire power-up, you HAVE to do some last minute dodges to win. Dr. Robotnik at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. The doc himself isn't that hard (particularly if you've gain the ability to go Super Sonic) but the fight itself is just cool. Also worthy mention is Sonic & Knuckles when playing as Sonic. One of the last really tough battles in any video game. The Dragonlord at the end of Dragon Warrior. Okay, so this was basically a battle of attrition, but he was very tough. Winning gave me a real sense of victory. Lavos, from Chrono Trigger. This is one where it takes everything you got to succeed. And the backgrounds rock. That machine thing from The Krion Conquest (a Mega Man-type game). The final boss in the original Bubble Bobble. And just about any last boss in any Mega Man game. Now... as for PATHETIC bosses... Final Fantasy 6. You can win this fight just by constantly casting the "Ultima" spell. Some "big bad villain" Kefka was, ne? Malth, in Ninja Gaiden. The first time I played, I beat him just by running up and slashing at him repeatedly. The final boss in Shinobi III - Return of the Ninja Master. There's a trick to beating him that makes him insanely easy. And it's probably one that EVERYONE who knows this guy inside and out has thought of. Actually, this battle's not that bad... Any of the bosses in Super Mario Bros 1. Video game villains are typically idiots, but keeping axes conveniently close to bridges so a plumber can jump over and cut them is just silly. Adventures of Lolo... actually, you don't even fight this guy. When you solve the last room, you're treated to a scene where Lolo basically blasts him and gets it over with. BTW NumbuhInfinity, I just got done doing a write-up about video games that I thougt you might like to read (RisanF too): www.theacorncafe.org/cgi-bin/viewer.cgi/offtopic/406F754A000056E3.html

I haven't played a lot of RPGs (and finished even less than that ^^;;;) but here's my list...
Hardest bosses:
-Chrono Trigger's Lavos and also the Black Omen boss (I had to get my brother to beat those for me ¯_¯)
-Final Fantasy Tactic's Wiegraf (both battles)--I ended up having to fight the battle over about 20 times for the first one, and rely completely on Ramza on the second
-Final Fantasy Tactic's Marquis Elmdor--I fought this battle about 8 times and the one that I kept lasted for like 2 hours. It probably would've been a lot easier if I had not tried to steal all the equipment on him, though...
-Final Fantasy X's um... I can't remember, but there was a time when I was like, "Er... was I supposed to lose that battle?" *Game over music plays* "Um... I guess not."
-Seiken Densetsu 3's Lightgazer--he was just hard.
-Sailor Moon Another Story's Rubeus--ARGH!! His defense was incredibly high and the only person who stood a chance against him was Sailor Moon, who also had an incredibly high defense, but she only did like 5 damage to him, so the battle would go on forever!
Ehe... I have a lot of them. And I'm pretty sure that's not it. I have a lot of those, "Er... was I supposed to lose that battle?" experiences.
Anyway, pitiful bosses:
-Chrono Cross's Dario--He was just really easy.
And um... agh!!! Why do I have so little? ;_;

Read your article, James. Interactive games like the one you described are good sometimes, but I wouldn't want it to be TOO all-your-choice 'cause often I'd be stuck on where to go/what to do and then I just give up.
Oh, and you just reminded me. Wily is one tough boss as well in almost every Mega Man game. He's especially insane in 7 and 8. I seriously wanted to wipe that ugly smile off his face. And when will he come up with a new strategy other than his disappearing/reappearing act?
Sigma from the Mega Man X series is also a big pain. X4's was the longest and most annoying.

Interactive games like the one you described are good sometimes, but I wouldn't want it to be TOO all-your-choice 'cause often I'd be stuck on where to go/what to do and then I just give up. Why does everyone who here's my little piece about the lack of choices in games think I'm referring to linearity vs. non-linearity? I'm not saying that games should let you do whatever you want. I'm saying games should give you set goals, but should give you choices on how to handle them. One reason I disliked Mario 64 was because of the boss fights. Just take the first one, with the big guy on the mountain. For some odd reason, you've GOT to throw him to somewhere else on that plateau--if you send him plummetting off the side, he just comes back. Yet in the NES game Double Dragon, there is a boss you fight on a high platform, and you can choose to either pummel him to death, or try to knock him off the platform. Either way, you win. I don't mind if I have to go to levels in a certain order, but I personally think that if I've got a certain objective and I've got a plan to achieve it, I shouldn't be penalized just because it's not what the game says I should do.

Looks like I guessed wrong. (And personally, I got more satisfaction beating the crud outta that big guy than going "Ugly guy go down the hoooooooole." So, um, I guess you're right after all.) ^^

Yea, Sigma was a pain, particularly in X4 (though I remember him being surprisingly easy if you were playing as Zero). I'm getting a little tired of Wily's disappearing-reappearing act myself. Then again, I feel the regular Mega Man series kinda went downhill after part six. There's an article about that here: www.mmhp.net/Commentaries/Decline.html(Note, I didn't write this one).

I'll give you two hard bosses I had a hard time with
Resident Evil: Code Veronica: I've always had a hard time fighting Tyrant in the end of the first half of the game. You fight him in a cargo plane. In other to beat him, you had to shoot him a bunch of times until he started to bleed. Then you had to push him off the cargo plane by pushing a button that would catapult a box in front of him. If he's not injured enough, he'll just push the box back to where it was.
If your not careful, he could either kill you with his claw, or by pushing you off the plane.
Breath Of Fire III: This was by far one of the greatest RPGs! I haven't played it in such a long time...
The last boss, Myria, was pretty hard. I don't really remembered what kinds of attacks she used, but to make a long story short, it took me about 45 minutes to beat her. Ryu (the main character.) was the only person standing.
That's all I can think of rightnow.

The roughest bosses I fought are as follows:
- In Super Smash Brothers Melee, the Master Hand and the Crazy Hand are one tight force I wouldn't mess with regardless of difficulty level. I wouldn't mess with Giga Bowser, either! He's tough to beat!
-In Sonic Adventure 2, the Biolizard was one of the hardest bosses to beat! It takes 7 blasts to kill him, but his attacks are not to be reckoned with.
-In Capcom vs. SNK 2, Shin Akuma and Ultimate Rugal were tough in the higher difficulty levels. I had a hard time beating them.
Sorry to say...
-...but in Sonic Adventure 2, the Finalhazard was easier than its predecessor. I don't know why.
-In Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Abyss was nothing to me.

Want games with tough bosses? Try Aero the Acro-Bat (SNES and Sega Genesis, I hear it was rereleased for the GBA as well), and Batman Returns for the Sega Genesis. In both cases some of the boss fights bordered on being outright unfair.

Now, for my pitiful boss.
Metriod Prime: The last boss, Metriod Prime(First Form), was pretty easy. It would change different colors and you'd have to use a weapon that you have that matches the color
If it changes yellow, you'd use the Power Beam or missles. If it changes purple, you'd use the Wave Beam. If it changes white, you'd use the Ice Beam. If it changes red, you'd use the Plasma Beam.
Even though it took me time to figure this out as well as her attack patterns, it got easy after that. ;D

DynamoMan from MegaMan & Bass is such a *****! Just turn on the Energy Saver (I think that's what it is--the doohickey that makes weapons use less energy) and keep using the Copy Image on him. The difficult part is when he goes to refill his energy. What I like to do there is jump up next to him, and go to the weapon menu for a second, switch to something else, then switch back to the copy (this way, if you've already got an image out, it disappears so you can put up a new one). Then take out the other side yourself or repeat the trick to put up a new copy image. Then just go to the floor and blast away. Lather, rinse, repeat as necessary, and blow his circuits out.

Here's a sad example for an end boss...
The Incredible Hulk for SNES/Genesis. In order to defeat him, all you had to do was uppercut him off the ledge. Pfft...

DynamoMan from MegaMan & Bass is such a *****! Burner Man is more annoying than Dynamo Man, IMO. Even if you have the Ice Wall that could deal a lot of damage when you push him into the spikes, his Wave Burner attack is hard to get out of.
