Anyone here made/are making/thinking of making their own (fan)game with a game-making engine? Just out of curiousity and for the sake of making this board active.
I've been thinking of making one myself, I got the story and gameplay system and everything, but due to time and little motivation (as well as not being a graphics expert, darn I wish I were an artist) I haven't been messing with it much at all.

I have an RPG Maker 2000. I got it before they put a stop to RPG Maker downloads...I've been trying to make a game of my own with it. Haven't worked on it in awhile, but it is pretty nifty. ;D

There's a program called Game Maker which is supposed to be a pretty good, general-purpose program.
But having to design your own graphics is usually the clincher---that's why I haven't been able to do a lot of game ideas I want to do.

They have other game makers as well, I believe. I am using RPG Maker 2003 for my game idea, but I am not using the default battle/menu system. Personally I feel the RM2K3 DBS (Default Battle System) seems less stable and quite sloppy than RM2K's despite its new features. So I'm making my own battle system instead (called a CBS, Custom Battle System, and RM forums), which can be done through the use of events and pictures... and decent knowledge of the program.

I looked at some battle screen shots. I think the in battle character sprites are kinda dorky looking. If I ever bother downloading 2003, I'm gonna edit them. And I don't like the character portraits as much either. Personally, I like the 2000 portraits. I'd use those too! Just one question. Are the event programming the same as the 2000 version?

Wow, doing a custom battle system seems hard. Right now, I'm trying to make three games. One is in the "planning phase," another is in the "making, but stuck on storyline (from lack of a planning phase) phase," and the last is in the "making, but stuck on the graphics phase." For the two I'm making, I'm using RPGM2000 and for the one in planning, I'm planning on using RPGM2003. I also have one I'm making on the Playstation RPG Maker, which is just something I do for a laugh. It basically has a weird storyline and even weirder characters, and if something doesn't go right (for example, I put a concrete wall behind a door), then I can roll around on the floor laughing. But.... I don't think I'll get anywhere with any of them. Sigh... The problem is that RPG making companies have a whole crew working on the RPG while RPG making using a program is mostly a by-yourself kind of thing. If I do manage to start making an RPG with a good storyline, I get stuck on the graphics. I always end up making custom graphics and taking forever trying to get them right. Even though I consider myself to be somewhat of an artist/pixel artist, I can never make good custom graphics. -_-;;; And actually, now I want to start making another RPG. A KND one! Ack... must... resist... urge... But it would be cool.

There was once a project underway called Chrono Master, which would've been a fan remake of Chrono Trigger for the PC, except that it would also have contained tools allowing people to build their own RPGs using the chrono trigger engine. I thought of doing that with KND, but unfortunately the project seems to not be going anywhere.

Hehe, I would definitely love to make an RPG or action-rpg version of KND, but we all know making fangames of movies or tv shows definitely requires custom graphics. Either that or very good editting of existing character sets. But since I'd also have to draw their machines and locations and everything I don't think I'll mess with a KND fangame anytime soon.
A Powerpuff Girls RPG, maybe, since it would be a lot easier to get away with certain things there (such as random monsters). But this would be my first venture into custom battle system making, so I'll start off with something simple instead. It's more humor/silly than anything, but I can post about it if anybody wants.

Heh, a KND RPG.... That would be cool. I've always thought about making a Megaman game. But I would probably need the 2003 version because in their battle system, they face sideways. I could easily cut sprites from the Megaman games, edit them a bet, and put them in. Although I would have to make the character sprites from scratch, it'd be worth it. Infact, I've already made my own Megaman and Protoman character sprites! I wish I knew how to post pictures ...

Hey, how about story? I'm quite sure if you had game-making ideas you probably at least thought of a story, basic, complex or whatever. It doesn't even have to be a serious one, it could be meant to be funny or a parody, even.
Mine is basically a humor/parody but is rather long, though. At least, it takes long to explain. Is it okay if I tell it anyway?

You can use GameFactory. 30 day free trial, no scripting, just draw, drag, and animate.

There is a different style RPG Maker coming out. It's called Tataki, and you can check out its website at kyonshi.co.uk/tatakai/. This is based on the Shining Force style gameplay, which uses preset battles, instead of random encounters.
