Sibling
Numbuh One feels alone because he doesn't have a sibling, and his friends do. Can his friends help him so he knows that he's not lonely? Takes place in the early 3rd grade year.

"Sibling day's going to be so much fun!" a nine-year-old Numbuh Three said, hopping up and down.
"If ya like doin' cruddy reports," Numbuh Four said.
"You're just mad 'cause you KNOW you're gonna get another F this year," Numbuh Five said with a chuckle.
"Whatever," grumbled Four.
"Hey, where's Numbuh One?" Numbuh Two asked. "He was with us a minute ago."
"I don't know where that kid ran off to," Numbuh Five muttered. "We gotta find him."
"No match of any sibling in the Uno family," the computer beeped. Numbuh One sighed desperately.
"How am I supposed to find a sibling for Sibling Day?" he moaned.
"Numbuh One!" called his friends. He turned to face them and closed his locker as soon as they approached him.
"Where were you, Numbuh One?" asked Numbuh Five. "We've been lookin' everywhere for you!"
"I was, um, attending to some important business?" Numbuh One smiled nervously.
"Makes sense to me," Numbuh Two said, shrugging.
"We were just heading over to the cafeteria," Numbuh Four said, thumbing towards the cafeteria. "You comin', Numbuh One?"
"I'll be right there," Numbuh One replied. "Just go ahead without me."
As the other operatives walked away, he opened his locker and searched for another sibling. "No match," the computer said.
"Oh..." Numbuh One buried his face on the keyboard.
"What was up with Numbuh One?" Numbuh Five thought out loud.
"Yeah...He didn't seem too happy to see us," Numbuh Two said in a concerned tone.
"I hope Numbuh One's okay," Numbuh Three said.
"Maybe he wanted to avoid the cafeteria food," Numbuh Four guessed.
"Nah," disagreed Numbuh Two. "It had to be something else."
Suddenly, Numbuh One burst through the doors, slouching. He grabbed a tray and started to look around for something to eat.
"Numbuh One?" said Numbuh Five.
"Are you okay, Numbuh One?" Four asked.
"Me?" Numbuh One looked up at them. "Oh, sure I am. I'm fine." He grabbed a plate of gelatin and put it on his tray.
"You don't look fine to me."
"Guys, if Numbuh One says he's fine, he's fine." Numbuh Five looked down at Numbuh One's tray. "Uh, is that all you're gonna eat, Numbuh One?"
"Well, I'm not really hungry..."
"You gotta eat something, Numbuh One," Numbuh Two told him. "One plate of gelatin isn't enough."
"I know what's enough for me," Numbuh One muttered angrily. He walked away from the lunch line.
"This isn't like Numbuh One," Numbuh Five said.
"Yeah. I wonder if an enemy operative brainwashed him," Numbuh Two said.
"It couldn't be that," Numbuh Five said, shaking her head. "We're gonna find out what's going down with Numbuh One, and we ain't gonna give up."
"So you mean..."
"Yep. A stakeout at the Uno home."
That evening, the four operatives sneaked outside the Uno home, with a half-built treehouse on the top. Numbuhs Three and Four were looking outside, Numbuh Two was on mobile command, and Numbuh Five sneaked inside the house cautiously.
"I'm inside," Numbuh Five said. "Numbuh Five will let you know what's up. You guys ready?"
"Numbuh One's inside the dining room," Numbuh Four said, spying on Numbuh One and his family through a pair of KND-style binoculars. "Sneak through there."
"Are you nuts?" Numbuh Five cried. Then she heard voices talking. "Shh! I'm pickin' up something." She leaned closer to hear.
"Nigel, are you alright?" Numbuh One's mother asked. "You're not eating your food."
"I'm sorry, Mom," Numbuh One said. "I was, um, thinking."
"Whatever are you thinking about, my boy?" Mr. Uno inquired.
"Mom...Dad...Do I have a sibling?"
"Um...What did you say?"
"Do I have a sibling? I mean, there's this sibling day at school, and I'm probably the only kid in school who doesn't have one. I checked on the computer, and there's no match of any siblings before or after me."
"I don't think we had any children before or after you," his mother answered. "I guess you're the only child."
Nigel's ears flopped down. "Oh...Well, thanks." He bowed his head. "May I be excused? I don't really feel like eating right now."
"Why, of course," his mother said. "Go ahead." Numbuh One walked out of the dining room and headed upstairs.
"Numbuh Five's gonna follow him to his room," Numbuh Five said into her walkie-talkie. She quietly moved up the stairs and into Numbuh One's room. She saw him depressed, looking at the ceiling.
"No wonder they call me Uno," sighed Numbuh One. "I'm just one person."
"This is Numbuh Five to both mobile and lookout command. Mission completed. I know what's up with Numbuh One. Over and out." Numbuh Five turned off her walkie-talkie, slid it into her pocket, took one last look at her leader, and raced off.
The next day, the kids decided to do something for their leader. At different times of the school day, they tried to make Nigel happy.
"Hey, Numbuh One!" Numbuh Two greeted when he met up with his friend. "You wanna hear a joke?"
Numbuh One sighed. "No, thanks, Numbuh Two. I'm not in the mood for any of your jokes or puns." He went ahead of Hoagie and walked off.
"But...Aw, come on! Even your jokes won't cheer ya up?"
"Numbuh One!" Three came up and hugged her friend. "Are you still feeling sad?"
"I'm not feeling sad," Numbuh One said. "I'm just thinking, that's all."
"Well, I'm just asking. It's not like we spied on you last night about you not having a sibling and---oops!" Three covered her mouth and skipped away from Numbuh One.
"What the..." Numbuh One became suspicious about Numbuh Three's remark. He raised an eyebrow and watched after her.
"Numbuh One!" shouted Numbuh Four. Both were on the playground at recess time. "You up for some dodgeball? It could cheer you up a little."
"I'd love to play, Numbuh Four, but unless it was a villain's doing or a mission, it wouldn't be important to me right now."
"But...What if the dodgeball target would happen to be those Delightful Creeps?" Numbuh Four said. "Huh? Think about it."
"Even though I despise the Delightful Children, I couldn't hurt them at a time like this," Numbuh One said. "I'm going to investigate further on this whole thing."
"Dodgeball?" Numbuh Four asked. "Well, it's easy! All you have to..."
"Not dodgeball, Numbuh Four!" shouted Numbuh One. "I just have one question to ask you."
"Sure, pal. Anything ya want."
"Did you and the others happen to have a stakeout at my house last night?"
Numbuh Four's eyes widened. "What?! No! 'Course not. We were at home! Well, uh, catch you later, Numbuh One! I think I've spotted those Delightfuls! Hey, come back here, you dorks!"
As Numbuh One watched Numbuh Four chase the Delightful Children, he began to become even more suspicious.
"Maybe Numbuh Five could tell me..."
"Numbuh One?"
"Hmm?" Nigel turned around to see Abigail. She knew that he would blow her off like the other operatives. "Numbuh Five! I've been looking everywhere for you."
"Really?" Numbuh Five said. "Numbuh One, I have to tell you something..."
"Before you say anything, Numbuh Five, let me ask you a question," Numbuh One said, turning away. Then, he pointed at her. "Where were you last night?!"
"Last night? Well, I, um, was...at the candy store..." Numbuh Five bit her lip. She knew she couldn't lie to Numbuh One---he was her friend. "Okay! We were at a stakeout at your house so we'd check to see if you were alright. You looked sad yesterday, man. We couldn't help but to spy on you. Numbuh Five knows you want a sibling, but you know what? You are not alone, Numbuh One. There are other kids like you who don't have any siblings at all. Their parents probably didn't want another child. Also, you have great friends and a terrific family. Why couldn't you realize that when you had the chance?" She sighed. "Did Numbuh Five offend you or anything? 'Cause if she did, she..."
"It's alright, Numbuh Five," said Numbuh One. "You don't have to say anything else at all. You're right. And I know exactly what to write on my report."
"But you don't have a sibling!"
"I know, but you'll find out."
"...And that's how my sibling Maxwell will become a successful person."
The class and teacher applauded. "Very good, Douglas," the teacher said. "Nigel? You're next."
Numbuh One stood in front of the class and started to read his report. Everyone, especially his friends, listened closely to what he was going to say.
"Some kids don't have a sibling, and some kids do. For those that do, I'm happy for them. I'm one of those kids that don't have a sibling at all," he read. Whispers began to fill the room.
"Doesn't have a sibling?"
"But he's Numbuh One!"
"But although I might not have a sibling, I have two parents who take care of me. Also, I have four great friends I can depend on. One is a kid whose puns and jokes are not as it is cracked up to be, but inside, I can feel laughter and joy."
Numbuh Two smiled.
"Another friend of mine is a happy person. She may mess up a bit, but she makes us glad to be alive."
Numbuh Three sighed happily. "Aww..."
"My third friend may be short for his size, but he can pack a punch when it comes to defending other kids in need."
Numbuh Four smirked, then frowned. "Who's he calling short?" he asked Numbuh Five.
"Finally, my fourth friend is the one with all the common sense. She may be different, she may talk in third person, but I can understand all the words she's said. She's helped me to realize that I don't need siblings to be happy. My friends are my siblings in a way, and that's all that matters to me."
The students cheered and applauded the moment that Numbuh One sat back down in his seat.
"That was a really cool speech, Numbuh One."
"Thanks for including us!"
"You know," Numbuh One began, "what I said in that essay is true. You guys are my best friends, and we're going to stick that way until our decommissioning."
"I go with you on that, Numbuh One," Numbuh Five said, and winked at him.
