Okay, listen up because it's really easy. I just explained this to my sister a couple days ago, so don't worry.
1. Log in using the "Log In" link on the blue bar at the top of the page. This should take you to an account management page with a column on the left side containing links to Account, Documents, Stories, Reviews, etc.
2. Click on the Documents link to view the document management section. Scroll to the bottom of the Submit Document part of this page, and at the very bottom will be a form for uploading documents. Under Doc Label, enter the title of the document- it doesn't have to be the story/chapter title, that comes in later. You just need something you'll recognize when you go back to edit it.
3. Under File on computer, click the browse button to the right and find the document in My Documents (note: I am assuming that this is using Microsoft Word, WordPad, or WordPerfect. I don't think it matters, but I could be wrong). This is just like opening the document in Microsoft Word, so pick the document and hit open. You'll know this has worked because the document will appear in the text box next to File on computer. Now you can click the Submit Document button and it should upload from your computer to the site. If it doesn't work the first time, try again. Sometimes FF.net likes to be retarded.
4. Now you should be able to see the document in the Document Manager table. Click the Edit/Preview link to view the document. Make sure that there aren't any formatting errors. FF.net, fixed this problem a long time ago, but sometimes there are still problems. If you want to and haven't included an author's note, you can do it here. If there are different sections in your story that you want separated, you can use the break option at the top of the page next to the underline, italic, and bold (it looks just like a line). Make sure that your paragraphs are double spaced, because if they aren't in your original document, they will be smashed together. When your satisfied that your document looks the way you want it to, click the Save Changes button.
5. Now that your document is ready, choose the Stories link in the left-hand column. At the top of the page should appear 4 links: Stories Guide, List Stories, New Story, and Guidelines. If you haven't uploaded a story in a while, chances are you'll need to accept the Guidelines, so click Guidelines link, read the contents, and click the link at the bottom that says "Yes, I have read and agreed to the content guidelines." (note: I highly suggest that you actually take the time to read the guidelines all the way through. There is a lot of good fanfiction and a lot of good authors who have had their accounts frozen or deleted because they broke a minor rule, so make sure your story meets all the required guidelines.)
6. Once the guidelines are accepted, click the New Story link. The page should have the heading New Story and a button that says First Step: Click to Select Category. Click this and a pop-up form should appear with the fanfiction Categories listed: Anime, Books, Cartoons, Comics, Misc, Movies, TV Shows, & Video Games. Click the correct Category to view a second column containing all the Sub Categories and find the corresponding Sub Category. Then click to continue.
7. The pop-up should disappear and the original window should show a story submission form. In the Title space, type the title of your story. In the Summary space, type a description of your story. You might want to include couples, spoiler warnings, or OCs (original characters). There is a word count limit to this, so be careful not to go too long, or it will be cut off on the display page. (note: I'm not sure what this word count limit is precisely, but I do suggest checking to make sure your summary hasn't been cut off once the story has been uploaded and, if necessary, going back to fix it later.) Under language, select the language the story is written in. For rating, choose the appropriate rating from K, K+, T, and M. If you can't remember the ratings (recall they appeared in the Guidelines), click the Rating link provided and read the descriptions. (Warning: Be very careful when choosing your rating. Most people won't care, but there are those who will report you for not using a high enough rating. If you're caught between two ratings, go with the higher one just in case.) You can pick up to two genres; the most relevant should be Genre 1. Finally, under Document, click the arrow and choose the document you uploaded earlier. Make sure it's the right document, and click Submit Story.
8. If the page changes to "Success; Story Created," then congratulations! You have submitted a story. If you check your e-mail, you will also find an alert similar to if you had marked the story under your Favorites or Alerts. You can click the link within to see your story.
