And how does that make it sad?

I guess he's lamenting the lack of activity.
Frankly I'm not surprised.... the only things that get discussed are new-school, big-hype games, and those usually lead to flame wars. Whenever we try to discuss something older or less popular, it gets ignored because not everyone knows of it.
I mean heck, let's discuss...
WOLFENSTEIN 3D!
[Crickets chirp]
Ummm.... Romance of the Three Kingdoms?
[Crickets still chirp]
.... Sonic the Hedgehog?
["Hey, I've played that!" Someone says... then they bring up all sorts of stuff that happened in the newer games that old-schoolers don't know about and people wonder why Dr. Robotnik is being called "Eggman"]
all right, let's discuss.... HALF-LIFE!
[This gets a bit of discussion, but then people start saying "Half Life was good, but [insert poster's favorite FPS here] was better" and arguement dies]
And then there's the "favorite game" or "favorite game type" polls, which are largely pointless.

I haven't really seen that happen. Not on this board, anyway.
The only Sonic game I know about is the Master System Sonic the Hedgehog 1. I love old games. Besides, I don't have the money or the system requirements to play newer games.

Man, if you don't know Wolfenstein, you cannot call yourself a gamer.

You mean... You can't call yourself an FPS gamer?
I've heard of it, but I've had no inclination to play. I don't like FPS at all.

Wolfenstein 3D? I remember playing that game when I was a kid Dude 1 : " If I have 30 oranges in one hand and 40 oranges in the other, what have I got? " Dude 2 : " Really big hands!!! " Dude 1 : " That answer was so funny, I'm going to take the ROFL-train to the LOL-city "

I've never played Wolfenstein, but have played the Half Life series and loved it.

I remember when Wolfenstein 3D was a new game. ;D
Now if we are going to discuss really old-skool games, I think we ought to start with Spacewar...for the original PDP-1...
*even the crickets go silent*

Well at least this thread has activity.

Space War is a little too old-school even for me... I've played it, but there's limits to how far back I can go.
Heck, let's get esoteric. Let's discuss Mechwarrior. Let's discuss Bubble Bobble. Let's discuss Splatterhouse. Let's discuss Quake. Let's discuss The Journeyman Project Turbo, just so long as we discuss something!
And posters henceforth get one cookie for every reference they recognize in my posts.

Okay...er...Pong? ;D
Oh, and you owe me 4 cookies. And if we're talking esoteric, well how about UUW1:The Stygian Abyss or, hmmm, how about Zork Zero or perhaps (for a trip into ULTIMATE esoteria) Slouching Towards Bedlam.

Well, has anyone heard of Hellbender? My mum used to play it, and the cutscene when you die made me cry. After that, the game scared me a lot.
And I hate it when games become unwinnable.

Agreed. It's just too depressing. That's one of the reasons I love LucasArts adventures...no matter what you do you can neither die nor get stuck.
And, Hellbender, are we talking the 3D space sim/fighting game here? The one with the Terminal Velocity engine? If so, I've sort of heard of it (I remember reviews). What was it like?

I'm really paranoid about getting stuck in a game. When I play old games in emulators using savestates, I always have a backup savestate just in case.
By engine, do you mean game engine? I don't know what kind of engine that was used, but Hellbender was a 3D space FPS. It was a sequel to Fury 3, which I never played. Basically you had to go to a bunch of different worlds, I think there were six, and fight the Bions, evil robots created by humans. After you beat all the worlds, you played in the Bion mothership, or something.
The game had a pretty dark atmosphere, I think. It was probably a lot of fun, but I was terrified to even watch my mother play it, so I'm not really the best person to ask. You spent a lot of time underground in tunnels, especially when you were looking for checkpoints. There was this guy who talks to you before you enter a planet. I thught he was the character you play, so I was really scared when he died just before the last planet.
