Well, I figured that this is one type of game we haven't discussed, and I figured I might as well start a thread about it. So, let's talk about Trading Card Games. Name ones you've played and what you thought about them. Go into detail.
I think I'll start by listing ones I've played, and my thoughts, in alphabetical order.
Ani-Mayhem - This one is special for three reasons: 1) it's an anime-based card game that actually came out before Yu-Gi-Oh (in fact, it beat the YGO TCG by about seven years). 2) It doesn't focus on just one show but mixes and matches a couple of different ones, including Ranma, Project A-Ko, and Dragon Ball Z. 3) It plays absolutely nothing like a normal card game, and in fact is more like an RPG (it can even be played single-player, which isn't exactly something that can be said for most TCGs). More info here. Sadly, I never really got a chance to PLAY this one, though being the hardcore otaku I was, I DID collect the cards. It seems like it would be a really fun game, and even though it was discontinued long ago, a Google search revealed to me that it apparently still has more than a few fans.
Magic: the Gathering - Info for those that need it. This one is pretty much the seminal TCG that everyone's heard about, and even though it's been awhile since I actually PLAYED it, I still consider it among the best. It's probably the best-thought out and fairest card game out there that best achieves a balance between strategy and luck (about the only way to do better is to invent a card game that totally does away with the concept of shuffling and drawing cards). It's also cool, to boot. It's only too bad that it doesn't have an anime tie in (though Duel Masters seems to feature a card game that is very similar in a lot of ways).
Pokemon TCG - I only played this one briefly and never really got into it. It was way too much like a dumbed-down version of the Gameboy game's battle system--a battle system I didn't really like in the first place.
Yu-Gi-Oh TCG - I know this'll be weird, considering that I've raved in the past about how excellent the Yu-Gi-Oh anime and manga are, but I honestly hate this card game. This game's the perfect example of why a product that was originally invented to advance some comic book's storyline should never be turned into a real game--rules that work in a fantasy story don't work in real life (to be fair, Konami DID alter the rules a bit--originally there were no Effect Monsters or Trap Cards, and there was no concept of "Tributes" though sometimes I feel the idea of "Tributes" was kind of worthless). And anyway, half the time it seems like they put no thought into making this game. Many cards are either so pathetically weak as to be useless (Skull Servant), or so overpowered as to be nearly invincible (Relinquished). It's really just a train wreck of a game.
Anyway, that's my thoughts. Anyone else wannashare some?
