I've never actually played a Final Fantasy game besides FF I, which I didn't even get to finish because the NES crapped out when I got to the vampire place. I've watched my cousin play VII-XI. I have Final Fantasy Chronicles for the PS, but I've only played the Chrono Trigger disc. I haven't gotten around playing the FF IV disc. Cecil is from there, right James. Righty-O! BLACK MAGE: Stabbity, stabbity... RED MAGE: Careful, that could give a -1 penalty to our readership! BLACK MAGE: ... You have a point there. Nor do I. If anything, it's a crossover. Personally, I feel the only FInal Fantasy games that are worth playing are the first six, possibly not including FF2. I tried to play FF7 again recently, as well as playing FFX. FF7 made me want to never play an RPG again and I found FFX almost offensive, not for storyline purposes but because of how the game assumes the player is a complete idiot. WAKKA: Hey, a flying creature! You need me to help you! PLAYER: I know Wakka. Heaven forbid that I might've ACTUALLY been playing this game for the past couple of hours and know things like this! Heaven forbid I'm a LONG TIME RPG FAN and might know a thing or two about long-range combat! I'm not a big fan of "storyline" games. I mean, Chrono Trigger had a good storyline, but it didn't use it as an excuse to dumb down and ignore the fact that it was a video game, the way FFX did.

I liked FFX, I especially thought Blitzball was a lot of fun.
I'm currently playing X-2, but am stuck with certain parts. Does anybody know if it's possible to beat the Al Bhed Machina weapon or the desert monster without a Black Knight dressphere?

I've never played Final Fantasy. I don't have a Playstation, and I'm not sure if I want to download Final Fantasy III. I like RPGs though. The first six Final Fantasy games (three for the NES, three for the Super NES) were fun, though there's differences in opinion on which ones were the absolute best out of those bunch. IMO, the best ones were 1, 4, and 6, and the worst one was FF2 for the NES/Famicom. At least the reason I don't like FF2 is something related to gameplay, as opposed to FFX...

Everyone says FF7 is the best game ever, especially as evidenced by Cloud and Sephiroth dominating the Gamefaqs Character Battles year after year. Am I missing something? I haven't played it, but can anyone say if these fanboys are onto something or not?

I haven't played it, but can anyone say if these fanboys are onto something or not? Final Fantasy 7 was considered so popular cause it was released during the era of 3D gaming and internet. It was one of the very first 3D rpgs that favored story more so over graphics (there were so much prettier 3D rpgs rivaling it). Not to say that the graphics weren't good for its time, the FMV movies were absolutely astonishing for a gaming system back in 1996/97. Story wise, it was considered epic for the case of three characters, Cloud(insanely tortured character with no knowledge of his birth), Aerith(female lead who many consider the best female FF character), and Sephiroth (the supposedly greatest badguy in the FF series. He even made a cameo as a hidden boss in Kingdom Hearts. His theme song, "One Winged Angel", is also the most popular FF song in the series.). Final Fantasy 7 is also notorious for being very, very emotional, especially at the end of Disc 1 (I won't say anything to spoil it for you). The game was also popular enough to warrant an actual movie. Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, will be released in Japan September 14, 2005 and sometime in October for America (it was originally going to be September 13, but they pushed it back to do English voiceacting.) As for FF7 the game itself, I say it's worth a buy. It's only $9.99 - $19.99 depending on the store you shop at. Go for it. It's still pretty good!

Everyone says FF7 is the best game ever, especially as evidenced by Cloud and Sephiroth dominating the Gamefaqs Character Battles year after year. Am I missing something? I haven't played it, but can anyone say if these fanboys are onto something or not? I hate to be the eternal naysayer, but I personally find FF7 to be the most over-rated game of the series, next to FFX. As most of my post will contain FF7 spoilers, I'm going to write it in hard-to-see black. You're going to have to highlight my text to see it: Most of the reason for FF7's popularity is because it is the first RPG many people have played.
As such, this game wins "novelty points" (and perhaps even nostalgia points) for many people.
For people who had been into RPGs before FF7, the game was actually considered something of a downer. I mean, I know I expected something AT LEAST as good as FF4 or 6 to take up three CDs. What I instead got was a storyline straight out of a superhero comic book. I mean come on.. the bad guy's ultimate plan was to destroy the planet with a huge meteor! Not to mention, the gameplay seemed like it was TRYING to disappoint me. I mean, at least FF4 and 6 were somewhat challenging... I played both of those recently and was surprised that some parts actually gave me a hard time, and sometimes I had to THINK (and the FF4 we got in America was a dumbed-down "easy" version, no less). In Final Fantasy 7 though, you can beat every enemy in the game just by picking "fight" over and over again and remembering to use cure when appropriate, and occasionally you had to use their weakness. Granted, it's nowhere near as annoying as FFX's "the characters have to make sure to always tell you who'se abilities you need and why" syndrome, but it was pretty disappointing nonetheless. People say RPGs are all about their story, but even RPGs need a modicum of gameplay.
Cloud gets points because he's one of those "Mercenary who sees the light" types, similar in some respects to Han Solo from Star Wars--he starts out caring only about himself and the money he gets, and feeling he isn't worth much... only... I never felt that there was any point in which I could identify with him. He was just kinda dry and I don't recall him having any real kind of "transition," just for some reason he drops his mercenary-ness and becomes a straightforeward leader type.
Aeris gets props from most people just because she dies... which goes back to what I said about this being most people's first introduction to RPGs. I mean, SEVERAL important characters die in Final Fantasy IV, and in more convincing (and emotional) ways no less, but of course they're not in 3D so it isn't "as good."
I don't even begin to understand why people think Sephiroth is so great. About the worst thing he does is look awesome, walk into a fire, and turn into some sort of evil angel for the final boss fight. He's a character with no real personality, save for a fixation on his mother. His whole motivation boils down to "Well, I'm crazy."
Okay, I've said enough. People are gonna throw hammers at me now. *James digs through his deck of Magic: the Gathering cards and activates "Indestructible Aura" around himself*

Does Fable have turn-based battle system?
I like turn based battle systems, but I liked Tales of Symphonia's battle system as well.
