I. Her name was Valica, one of the Delightful Children From Down Lane. Her most noticeable characteristic was the pink bow she wore in her hair. Other then that she looked just like the rest. There was one other thing. Something that made her different. Valica had a problem. No one knew when or how it began. The other Delightfuls found it hard to except. How could one of them be different? It didn’t seem possible in their minds. They treated her the same as everyone else. She had never done anything to gain attention. Nor was she the type to even attempt it. Such behavior was not deemed as Delightful. Neither was this! As time went by her siblings tried less to figure out the cause, and tried harder to just ignore it. Surely that would make it go away. They were wrong. In fact, the more they tried ignoring it. The more it transpired.
No matter how they tried to conceal it. Wether by turning a blind eye to it, or simply walking away. It always ended the same way. Eventually on of the Delightfuls would walk right into it’s embrace! Like the time Jina made a trip to the restroom. Nothing was out of the ordinary that day. As Jina approached the bathroom door. Nothing could’ve prepared her for what came next. For a simple turn of a doorknob became a most unwelcome surprise. For their in the room, sitting the stall was Valica. She had one leg over the other, which didn’t seem to strange to begin with. What caught Jina of guard was what she was doing. For laying on the floor was one of her shoes. A bright, pink stocking laid closely beside it. But what shocked her sister the most was what she was doing to her bared foot. The way she was dragging the tip of a feather up and down the sole. Valica didn’t seem to notice her sister at first. She was just sitting their smiling. Gently brushing the feather up and down and up and down. She must have heard Jina gasp for she stopped very suddenly.
Valica looked over at her sister. The feather fell from her grasp and she jumped off the toilet seat. She smiled at her very nervously. Jina stood their with her eyes wide open. Her jaw was hanging down in utter shock! It was as if she just witnessed the most horrifying thing in her life! And although it surely wasn’t the most shocking, it was unexpected. And by the time she was able to say anything Valica had gathered her her scattered foot apparel and walk out the door. From that day on the Delightfuls had been alerted to the problem. Afterward Jina often wondered how long Valica had been doing it. And just what else she was keeping from them. They soon found out allot more then they wished too.
After the ‘Bathroom Accident’, as Jina called it. Stranger occasions had started to pop up. Like a certain birthday they would never forget! Not only was their cake taken from them by the Kids Next Door once more. But an unseen present was about to be opened. One that should’ve never by given in the first place.
It all started shortly after the party. The guest had all been freed from their captivity. For it had been a common ritual to force the neighborhood kids to attend their parties. Which never ended in happy memories. This day the Delightfuls were quite upset. This year their cake had been made from the richest of dark chocolate. It was their favorite kind of cake, besides coconut. So angry were they that they failed to see that their were only four of them. Valica had gone missing after was abruptly stopped by the KND. Usually the poor thing was found in her room. Doing something that wasn’t very delightful. She would always run to her room and cry on her bed. The Delightfuls knew it was wrong to show emotion, their Father had taught them that. Still they all felt very close, and sometimes all they had was each other. And so they made their to her room. When they had reached their destination, something odd happened. A sound was emanating from behind the door. What was so out of place was the sound itself. For this sound wasn’t sad at all. It sounded like laughing, which was very uncommon after a botched birthday. So slowly they went up to the door and listened in. Sure enough they heard laughter, but whatever could be funny? Their birthday party had been ruined. Their cake was now in the hands of the KND. It didn’t make any sense at all! But the only way to find out was to investigate.

The door to the room flew open and in walked the rest of the Delightfuls. What transpired next became the reason to knocking before entering. For before them was a site not many had seen in that mansion. Three kids, most likely from the party, were bound to their seats. Their feet had been bared and were neatly placed on cushioned stools. Valica's was kneeling down in front of the pairs of cute feet. Playfully she began to tickle the soft soles with her fingers.
“Let’s all sing the birthday song!”, she said gleefully.
And the kids complied, “It’s your birthday! Not our birthday! Happy Birthday HOORAY!!!!”
The song, although the right words were present wasn’t the same. Instead of the usually monotone, drowned out voices. It was replaced with the sounds of joy and contentment. It was as if they were...Dare the Delightfuls even think it! Happy! They actually were happy and at their party! Never had such a display of enjoyment ring through the mansion. Not since Father started giving them only one birthday a year. It was like the old days, and the Delightfuls weren’t pleased. No one was suppose to have fun if they weren’t enjoying themselves!
Valica had just started working her way down the line of wiggling, happy feet when her siblings shouted.
“What is the meaning of this!?”, they cried in unison.
Valica turned to face them and stopped tickling her guests. “Hi guys!”, she said faintly. “Ummm? Happy Birthday!?”, she asked.
The four faces staring at her were now turning a bright red. This was an outrage to the Delightful Code, Not only that but they were quite embarrassed. To say the least they were very disappointed in their sister as well.
“Get...Them...Out of here!”, they command harshly.
Quickly she untied her guests. Each sound quite sad to be leaving so soon, which was also strange. As they grabbed their shoes and socks they hurriedly put them on. The Delightfuls stood their in silent anger as each one walked out of the room.
“See you again next year Valica!”, one of the kids called back to her with a smile.
Sadly she knew their might not be a next year.
As soon as all of them had left they shoot the door behind them. Staring at their sister with anger and disrespect. What was she thinking!? Did she not know this was against everything that ment being a Delightful Child? The next thing she knew her siblings had surrounded her. The fires raging in their eyes told her she had done something wrong.
“Would you mind explaining yourself sister!?”, William, the short blond boy said.
“Yes! We all would like to know what has been going on!”, Jina, the chubby one exclaimed.
“What do you think your doing!? Do you know what you’ve done!”, an echo came forth from the helmet of Marcus.
“Surely you must know that such actions are against everything we stand for!”, shouted Richard, the tallest of the boys.
“Yes! And what was ment by last year?”, they all asked. “How long has this been going on!? How long!?”
Poor Valica was already on the her knees looking down at the floor. She didn’t think anything was wrong with what she was doing. Everyone was happy, like it use to be. The way she remembered it. Now even her siblings were yelling at her. It wasn’t until Father was mentioned did she look up at them. At first she thought they were just saying that out of anger. The look in their eyes told her differently.
“No please!”, she begged them. “Please don’t tell Father. You know what he’ll do if he finds out. Please don’t tell him, please...”she said on the verge of tears.
The Delightfuls looked down at her with the same look. “We should tell him. It is the right thing to do!”
“No! You can’t tell him! Please don’t tell him.”, she pleaded with tears. “I..I only wanted....I only wanted them to be happy...Like...like it was on or birth.....”, she stopped right their and fell to the floor in sobs.
The Delightfuls looked at her then at each other. Instantly their looks changed to the of remorse, something not likely among them. Yet they were siblings, and all had the same feelings toward Father. And so they all got down and placed a hand on her shoulders.
“Were sorry for yelling at you Valica.”, they said together. “But we can’t allow this to happen anymore. Your very lucky we found you first. And we promise not to tell Father, but you have to stop doing this. It’s not Delightful. Tickling isn’t even fun and we can’t allow this to continue. You must learn to control it. Otherwise we might not be their to save your secret.”
Valica brushed the tears from her eyes and nodded. “But..I like doing it.”, she said softly.
“WHAT!!!?”, they exclaimed. “How could you!? It’s most nerve racking!”
“Because...Because when I was younger He would give me tickles. He loved me so much back them. Before the accident he loved us all. He showed me his love by making me laugh. He liked to hear me laugh. And now all I have left is those memories. Like when birthdays were full of happiness. I just wanted to bring some of that back. And those kids. They liked it as well.”
“I see. So how long has this been going on?”, asked Richard.
Valica didn’t really know. From what she could remember it all started some time ago. The exact days or times were not really important, at least not to her it wasn’t. Still the Delightfuls had a serious situation on their hands. If Father ever found out Valica would be in terrible danger. So they agreed to keep what they had witnessed a secret. However, Valica had to agree with her part as well. She would have to control herself and her urges to tickle herself or others. It wasn’t going to be easy as they all knew. But anything was better then having Father finding out the truth. That one of his Delightful Children had been breaking his pledge. And so the five siblings began to work together trying to resolve the situation at hand.

Weeks had past since that fateful birthday. Everything was going very smoothly. Several battles had taken place against the Kids Next Door. Each time the KND had won, but still Valica’s secret was kept from Father. Though the troubling thought still hung over their heads. For they knew how intelligent Father was. One day he would find out. That single thought kept all of them on edge. Kept for Valica. It wasn’t really her fault. She tried so hard, but now and then she would get that urge. Sometimes the urge was to strong to resist. Though she was very clever. After all, she had been doing it for years without anyone knowing it. By this time she had confined it only to her room. Also it was scientific fact that no one, not even a Delightful could tickle themselves. Knowing this it didn’t bother her to retire to her room. Once their she would partake in brushing a feather across her soles. No worries that anyone would her her laugh. It was very safe and secure. The only thing she didn’t think of was this. By just brushing the feather on her own soles she never got the effect she wanted. You can’t laugh when you tickle yourself. She pondered on this, many solutions came to mind. She could try closing her eyes and tickle herself. Though it might not work. Then their was the ‘Tickling herself while your asleep’, which seemed to make since. Only thing was how was she going to do that once she was asleep. Valica was nearly out of her mind trying to think of a way. Never did she think that going back and doing what she use to do would cause some much headaches. There had to be a way, there just had to be.
Through all this confusion and mind racking thought she barely heard the sound of knocking. She got up and put her slippers on. Walking to the door she peeked out. Their was Jina standing outside, several books were tucked under her arm. She could possibly know what she was doing at her door. She could possibly know what she was doing.
“Jina? Shouldn’t you be in bed?”, she asked.
“Not likely. Incase you’ve forgotten we were going to study tonight.”
Valica slapped herself on the forehead. Jina was right. They did make plans earlier in the week. How could she have forgotten. It wasn’t like her to forget her studies. Then a thought came to mind, a most disturbing thought. For at that moment Valica wasn’t thinking studying at all. She looked at Jina with a warm smile.
“Of course! Sorry I must have forgotten all about it! Thanks for reminding me.”
“Reminding you? Half an hour after we were going to do it?”
Valica smiled her usual Delightful smile and went to get her text books. While she was gathering her books she asked her were she wanted to study. The mansion was usually quiet anytime of the day or night. When she had emerged from her room with textbooks in hand, Jina had already decided.
“I think the library will suit our needs.”, she said bluntly. It was of course was her favorite place in the whole mansion. No one would disturb their studies in there. And with all the knowledge it stored it was the perfect place to look up any kind of reference. And so both sisters made their way down the hallway. As they neared the great library not a soul was to be seen. All the halls were darkened except for some dimly light lamplights. Their shadows casted eerie forms across the walls and floor.
The doors of the library loomed over them. Two wooden frames stared at them through the darkness. Jina grabbed hold of one of the doors and pulled. The hinges made a moaning sound like that of an angered spirit. Valica never did figure out why Jina liked this place so much. So it was clean, big deal! Every place in the mansion was clean. One of Father’s rules was to keep everything clear and proper. Which was about the only thing she liked about the place. Books were good once and while, but Jina practically lived in the room. In fact, Jenkins, the butler had often found her amidst the endless volumes of literature. It did have internet but Father only allowed a half an hours use. And with all the extra security he put into them the Delightfuls could hardly access any sites at all. Email and chatrooms where of limits as well. In short it was the boringest part of the mansion to Valica.
“Well let’s get started.”, her sister said. And made her way over to a table with two chairs.
Both of them sat down and began their studies. As time went by Valica became very bored and tired. Her face was almost planted between the pages of her math book.
“Math. Why did it have to be math?”, she said in a dazed manner.
Jina looked up from her book, “Are you complain? You know that Delightfuls never complain.”
“I’m not complaining. It’s just math hurts my head. Why didn’t we start with something that doesn’t bore me to death, or puts me to sleep?”
“Because it’s your hardest subject. You need to study on the subjects that are difficult first. It’s like father always says, ‘The harder things are the better you do them.’”
“I know I know. There’s just got to be an easier way of studying it.”
“Of course there is!”, Jina smiled and pulled her chair closer to her.
Valica tried to pay attention as Jina went through the process of LONG DIVISION! But try as she could her mind began to fade away from math. Her eyes stared at the book but weren’t focusing on anything. Her thoughts were straying deeper into the recesses of her brain. Turning away from all the was Delightful. Forgetting everything about the dread LONG DIVISION! Straying into her happy place. A place that housed her greatest memories. Thoughts of her Father before the accident. Of birthdays and laughter. Of tickling!
Meanwhile Jina was busy explaining long division, and was becoming wrapped up in it’s process. The girl hardly looked up from her calculator as the digits flashed before her eyes. this was her first mistake. For had she taken the time to glance up at her sister. She would see that her teachings weren’t having any effect. Right now Valica was so far gone she couldn’t even hear very much of anything. About the only thing that came through was grabeled sentences. And as Jina went on her words were becoming separated, jumbled up inside Valica’s head.
She started to show her were she was having problems. That the dismal point was getting her confused. Perhaps she failed to realize she needed to add it later on. The only thing that came through was, ‘....I can help you.....’
“That’s nice.”, Valica replied hazily.
Jina not really hearing what she said she continued with her solution. Valica was finally looking at her, but her mind was causing her to see a different situation. She could see Jina and hear her. Yet what she was hearing and what was being said were to complete opposites.
“..I can help you....with your problem....”, she heard Jina say.
Valica smiled upon hearing this.
“...I’ve found the solution to your problem....”
Valica sighed and said something that didn’t make any sense.
“...Let me show...It’s quite simple really......” Even without an explanation Valica understood what had to be done. If only her sister had known what was to come next.
Jina had finished her calculations and was about to show Valica the answer. That’s when she noticed the empty chair beside her. She looked about but she was no where to be seen. Jina scratched her head and called out to her sister. There was no reply.

‘Maybe she went to the bathroom’, she thought. Then something grabbed her from the sides. She jumped up from the chair and let out a short giggle. She turned around and saw a figure duck behind a nearby table. Her eyes narrowed as she heard a sweet giggle coming from the same direction.
“Valica what do you think your doing? We have studying to do. Now stop this foolishness and get back here! How else are you suppose to learn your math without my help?”
Jina was quite upset. Here she was taking her time helping her out. Then out of no where she starts acting up. It certainly wasn’t Delightful, that much was certain. However, she decided to ignore her for now. Hoping she would regain her senses and go back to her studies. As she sat back down she felt a sensation on her underarm. The touch caused an overwhelming reaction of laughter, bringing her down to one leg.
“Gotcha last!”, here sister called out.
Jina growled in frustration, “Knock this off! There’s no time for these little games of yours! Now get back her and study with me!”
There was no answer. This made her even more angry. They were suppose to be studying, but now Valica had turned it into a tickle game. Again Valica attacked her sisters sides and ran off.
“That’s it!”, screamed her sibling and Jina went off after her.
Though it wasn’t the best of plans. Neither was just standing around allowing this to continue. So Jina left the table and went looking for her sister. As she looked around valica came from behind and got her good in the ribs. Jina shrieked with surprise and took after her. All around the library she chased her, with Valica giggling all the way.
“I’ve had enough of this!”, Jina cried.
Valica came running from behind one of the book shelves. Jina saw her and took of after her. Wanting no more of this she lunged at her legs bring her down to the floor. Valica rolled on the floor giggling as Jina pinned her arms over her head. Valica tried getting up but Jina was holding her down tightly. Slowly she began to calm down.
“Now! Are we just about done with this!?”, she asked harshly.
Valica just laid there looking very tired. Satisfied that she was calming down she let go of her arms. That was another mistake. Immediately after she let her go she gave Jina’s underarms a good tickle. Jina wasn’t to happy about this and pinned her knees to Valica’s waist. Now she was totally helpless. Jina out weighted her by more then a third. Although she tried getting up she could push her off her.
“Okay Miss Giggles! You like tickling huh? Well how do you like this!?”, she said and started running her fingers along her sides.
This sent Valica into a fit of laughter. There was no way she could get up, as if she wanted too. For unknown to her sister, this is what she wanted. And so as Jina worked her way up and down her sides Valica showed no sign of struggle. As she neared her underarms Valica went absolutely nuts! Her screams of joy echoed through the library. After several minutes Jina stopped and let her go. Valica just laid on the floor breathing heavily. Her eyes were soaked in tears and her hair was a mess. Her pink bow was mashed and squashed from rolling about.
“Now can we get back to our studying now?”
Valica nodded and slowly picked herself up. Jina extended a hand and took hold of her sisters. As she helped her up a sound came from the hall. It was the sound of footfalls. They stomped as if they belong to a giant! Hard and thunderous they were. Each step grew louder as it approached the doors. The two girls shook with fright! For they recognized them. They had heard them many times before.
“FATHER!”, they cried in unison.
Feverishly they began to fix their hair and smooth out any wrinkles in their garments. Valica was trying to fix her bow when the doors flew open. For a moment it was as if they had opened on their own. No sign of anyone could be seen from the doorway. Then from the darkness he came forth. A faceless entity of immense stature now appeared. The shadows themselves seemed to come alive as he stepped from the darkened opening. His yellowish eyes stared out from the blackened form. They scanned the room and fell upon the two young girls. he stepped closer and loomed over them.
“What pray tell is going on here!?”, he spoke in a monstrous tone.
The sisters trembled as they looked up at him. Indeed he was a nightmare to behold. For even his appearance barely looked human. The room seemed to grow hotter as he glared at the two.
“Well!?”, he said impatiently.
“We...we were just studying Father.”, they managed to say.
He came them a quizzical look. Their hair was a mess and their cloths needed pressing. Some of the chairs had been tipped over and books were scattered across the floor. Then he spied some books resting on a nearby table. Yet his children were no where near them. Strange indeed was the scene. Father looked down at them again and then back at the table.
“I see.”, he said walking over to the lonely table. He gazed at the materials laid out before him. Several text books, notebooks, some pencils and a calculator decorated the table. He picked up an opened math book and leafed through the pages. “I know. Back when I was a child. I thought math was such a boring subject. Almost put me to sleep several times while studying it. Yet you my children, must’ve found a special way or overcoming that boredom. For was it not laughter I heard coming from here!?”, he said shutting the book and slamming in on the table.
By now both girls were holding each other and trembling uncontrollably.
“Well!? Answer me!”, he shouted.
“Yes....Father...”, they said in unison.
“Yes what!?”
“Yes Father...... we were studying.”
“Studying was it!? Then why are your garments wrinkled? How come your hair is unkept? And Valica! Your bow is neither proper nor is it straight! Yet you tell me you’ve been studying!? Look at this place! It is in total disarray!”, he cried out in anger.
The Delightfuls looked at the overturned chairs and books laying about. They looked at each other and then at Father. Nothing more needed to be said. They bowed their heads and folded their hands. “We are sorry Father. We were wrong to behave in such a manner.”, they said together.
The room grew silent as the two stood in shame. Father stared at them with disappointment. Never had something like this happened in his house. And to think his Delightful Children would take part in such a unrulely, destructive fashion. Only the disrespectful would act like untame animals. Only naughty children would dare do such a thing. If there was one thing he couldn’t stand was disobedient child! The very thought caused his eyes to flare in anger. Had he not taught his children to obey? Had he overlooked something in his way of teaching? Positively not! He was the Father and he was never wrong!

Again they tried apologizing but he would none of it! He was deeply enraged at what had taken place. He walked up to them with his eyes narrowed in frustration.
“Jina!”, he said with a commanding voice.
She moved forward and addressed him.
“You have angered me and I do not wish to be. Therefore you will win back my trust by straightening up this mess!”
“Yes Father.”, she said sadly.
Father then turned his attention to Valica. “As for you my dear. You will come with me, I have much to discuss with you.”, he said taking her hand.
As he led her to the doorway he looked back toward Jina. He made it quite clear he wanted the library cleaned up before her bedtime. It was also imperative that she be in bed at her normal time. And if by chance the library wasn’t restored to it’s original state, she would find herself placing each book in alphabetical order the following morning. She answered with a “Yes Father.” and went to work fixing up the room.
The sound of a harsh ‘Bang’ could be heard as Father closed the doors. Now it was just him and Valica. The halls were extremely dark. Even with the lights it was hard to see. Father had no trouble navigating through the inky blackness. Valica on the other hand tried to stay as close to Father as possible. She couldn’t afford to lose site of him. In his present state he would take her getting lost as an act of rebelling. The last thing she wanted was to make Father more upset.
The journey down that hallway seemed like an eternity. No one spoke and Valica felt it better not to try. The only sound that could be heard was the sound of their footsteps. It was a lonely trip with nothing to comfort the uneasy silence that followed them. Valica thought she spied something to the right. As her eyes adjusted she could see a flight of stairs ahead of them. These led to the third floor of the mansion.
The Delightfuls had only been up too the third floor maybe twice. The third floor was mainly for Father himself. The master bedroom was up their, as well as his dining area. Father always eat by himself. he had never eaten with his children as far as he could remember. Most importantly was his private study. A place that even the servants dared enter. The Delightfuls had only graced it’s presence once. Valica never got what it was like to walk inside Father’s study. That endless hall of burning torches. The maddening art pieces that hung in the inner chamber’s walls. Father’s favorite chair that stood upon a throne of cold stone. And that unmistakable feeling of intense heat. Once was enough for anyone to indure. yet as she walked up those same steps. She felt that she might see it again.
When they reached the third floor they went too their left. On the walls were tapestries and portraits of Father. Private art collections placed in locked cabinets were set up against the walls. Valica cared not to look at them. She knew she was not here for the sites. Father never asked to speak to anyone just to show off his collections. A specially his own children. He barely allowed the staff to be seen on that floor.
The more they walked the more nervous Valica became. And when she saw the door they were coming too she held her breath. It was large oak door with a metal knocker in the middle. The knocker was that of a gargoyle’s head with fire erupting from it’s mouth. Father grasped the doorknob and turned it. There was a snapping sound as the latch gave way. He swung the door open and bid her to enter. Many stories about this study were whispered throughout the mansion. Some said that a secret tunnel was hidden inside. And that this tunnel went to the very pits of hell itself! Others claimed it was hunted by evil spirits and arch demons. Being one of those that had been inside it’s confines Valica could only agree with them. The atmosphere was very different then any other part of the mansion.
“Come!”, Father called from inside. His voice seemed to travel up toward the ceiling.
Valica began to shake with fright and slowly walked inside. The hallway was just as she remembered it. The torches still burning, casting a hellish red glow about them. Valica heard something coming from behind. When she turned around the door was slowly closing by itself! Surely their was some form of supernatural force that had closed it. She backed away from the entrance. She hated the room and wished she was far away from it.
“Come in my dear.”, Father said rather calmly.
Her heart races as she made her way to the inner chamber. The torches with their unearthly heat caused her to sweat. She had forgotten how uncomfortable the place was. Not only mentally but very much physically as well. How Father could stand it was beyond her. Valica walked cautiously as she approached the inner chamber. Looking back toward the entrance, hoping nothing would be behind her. Soon she was inside the main part of father’s study. The room was much larger then expected. The chair was still in the same place, now turned to face the hallway. Beyond the chair was a humongous fireplace! The sounds of a fire crackling could be heard. A greyish mist caused by the fires slithered about the throng. The ghastly pictures seemed to stare at the small child. Menacing they all looked, as if they wanted to do her much harm. And there, standing by a small card table was Father. His back was to the room. He was staring out a stained glass window with his arms found behind him.
“Come closer my child.”, he said.
Valica turned to face her Father. He still was looking at the window. How he had seen her without looking was beyond her. In a sinister way she thought he always knew when his children were near. As if they never left his site, even when he wasn’t with them.
“I am here Father”, she replied nervously.
Father raised his head upward, “Recite the Delightful Child Pledge.”
Valica was shocked! Why would he ask for that? It didn’t make any sense, yet a weight had been lifted from her. She sighed in relief and then stood straight and as proud as she could muster. Then after clearing her throat she began:
A Delightful Child takes pride in obeying all adults We always mind our manners Never do we talk back to any grown ups
A Delightful Child is always clean and tidying Never do we beg or complain For doing so makes us naughty
A Delightful Child never shows emotion No cries of tears Nor howls of laughter
A Delightful Child always follows the Golden Rule Better to be seen And never to be heard
We are Delightful Children And we pledge ourselves to the adults Be respectful and obedient A specially to our parents
She ended the pledge with a low curtsy.

Then came a sound she was not expecting. A loud applause emanated from Father. He was facing her now and clapping loudly. She smiled her usual, Delightful smile and bowed once more.
“Marvelous!”, he cheered. “Couldn’t have said it better myself.”
Valica bows once more and respectfully thanked. She felt at last she had done a good thing. That she had won his love once more, but that soon would change. For when she looked up he was in a different mood. She could tell just by the look in his eyes. The same eyes that seemed to shine where no burning with an intense glow. His hands were seated at his sides. His very stature seemed to grow and hover over the small child. So full of power did he look that Valica began to shiver.
“You know it’s quite funny.”, he said beaming at her. “You recite that pledge perfectly. However, you also have broken every rule that binds it together!”
Now instead of a smile their was a frown of disappointment on her face. Her head literally hanging down in shame. For he was right about everything. She had gone against the pledge, a pledge she was forced to memorize and learn. Only now had that dawned on her. Never would she had thought he little interest would bring her to this point. Let alone cause Father such harm. Though being a Delightful she immediately apologized and asked for forgiveness.
Father ignored her pleas and continued, “I know you’ve been wayward. I don’t pretend not to know why.”
“I don’t understand Father. I have always been loyal to you.”
“Of course you have! You would never do anything to intentionally bring me pain. Now would you my dear?”
Valica answered with a quick, “No Father.”
“Of course you wouldn’t. Your such a good child I would never even think of such a thing. But would you believe a servant found something under bed while cleaning your room? Can you guess what it was that she found?”
Many things came to mind. The most obvious being her slippers. Sometimes after getting out of bed she would accidentialy kick them underneath. One time it took about three weeks before she found them. But what did her slippers have to do with anything? She had twenty other pairs in her walk-in closet. As strange as the question seemed she answered with ‘her slippers’.
Father chuckled an unhappy chuckle at the answer. She apparently was wrong. The answer was even weirder then question. As his memory went back to four weeks ago a maid had came to him. She was busy tidying up the Delightfuls rooms and had found something under Valica’s bed. When she brought the items to Father he was as surprised as she was. Not knowing what to do with them she left them with him. For weeks afterward he had been meaning to ask her. Now after what had taken place in the library he thought it was time.
“Feathers!”, he said. “That is what was found! Feathers of all things! I wonder my dear. What do you think they were doing under your bed!? What purpose could they serve!?”, he asked moving closer to her.
Valica started backing away, “I’m sorry Father.”
“Are you now? I don’t think so! I think there’s something on your mind! Would you like to share it with me!?”
“Please Father I didn’t mean to! I..I just wanted too....” The poor girl couldn’t even think what to say next. At that moment, as her Father moved closer and closer, she felt a tear run down her cheek.
“You just what!?”, snarled the form before her.
“I just wanted to be happy.”
“Happy!? You live in a mansion! You have servants that cook, clear and care for you! Every meal is a banquet!Your schooled by the best tutors! And you say your not happy!? What else could I give you that I haven’t already!? ANSWER ME!!!”
By now she was down on her knees, looking up at Father. She could no longer stop the flow of tears. She tried her best not to cry, though deep inside of her the aching of her heart grew worse.
“Please....please I said I was sorry father....”, she sobbed.
“Stop that! Stop that do you here me!!!? Stop that crying you weak, disobedient brat!!! I don’t care if your sorry or not! I want some answers!! Now tell me about what was found in your room!!!TELL ME!!!!!”
“please....please daddy..please don’t punish me....”
“What did you say?”
“It’s...it’s always so dark....this place is always so dark.....”, she cried.
“What did you call me!?”
“I....I feel so alone sometimes....”
“WHAT DID YOU CALL ME!!!!!!!?”, he snarled, now bending over the frightened girl.
“OH DADDYYY!!!!”, she said bursting into tears.
It had been the first time in many years. Too many years since one of his children addressed him by that name. And he didn’t take it to kindly. “DON’T YOU EVEN CALL ME THAT!!! DO YOU HEAR!!!? NEVER!!!! I AM YOUR FATHER!!!!”
This only made her cry even more. Valica, with tears streaming down her face, looked up at a man she use to know. A man that cared for her and her siblings. Now all she saw was a blackened hate. A shell of his former self. She wanted so much to see that man again. To have him hold her in his arms like he use too. As she knelt their, now down on one hand she reached for him. Begged him to come back, to be the father she once knew. The that cared for her. The one that loved her, that made her laugh.
“please daddy...please come back...i miss you so much.....”
Father had heard enough and lunched at her grabbing her arm. the very one that had been reaching out too him. Valica screamed as he held her up his level. Her feet now dangling off the floor.
“Call me by that name once more! Say it again and I’ll really give you something to cry about!”, he cursed dropping her to the floor,
She landed hard on her left leg and cried out in pain. With that Father walked away from her. He no longer could even look at her, for she had angered him. And as his child laid on the floor crying he took his place in his chair. Again he commanded her to stop with the crying. Telling her how ridiculous she looked. How shameful it was to act in this manner in front of him. He even went so far as to call her a, ‘Human Speck of Garbage’!

This of course only added to the sadness in her heart. The pain was becoming to great to bare. Even now she clutched her chest as if it were to explode! “My heart! Oh Father my heart! It’s breaking!”, she said through sobs.
Father just sat their watching her. He had no compassion left for her. In fact he mocked her by saying his heart was also breaking. Breaking of course because she was defiling him.
“You talk of me being different!”, he said harshly. “Yet looking at you I would say you are the one who has changed! Look at yourself! Your like an insect groveling in front of the spider! Wallowing around in your tears, you a disgrace! You are the one who has changed in front of my very eyes! I see clearly now what your are! You were a mistake! You are not worthy of being a Delightful Child! Therefore I see no further use for you. You will casted from my site until you are worthy of my honor!”
Valica looked up from the floor, “.......what?”
“You heard me! You are no longer welcome in my house!”, he said standing up. “I here be banish you from this place! Now go and pack your things! Get out of my site!”, he cried rushing towards again.
Valica squealed in terror and rang from the chamber.
Father called after her. Alerting her that she had a half an hour to pack her stuff and leave. The only response he got was the sound of the door slamming shut. There he sat clutching the chairs arms. Fire leaped from his body and the smell of sulfur engulfed the room.
Back in Valica’s room a little girl was putting busy putting cloths into a large carry-on suitcase. She tried the best she could to contain herself. Wiping the tears from her eyes she went to her dresser. From their she gathered up a armful of pink socks and placed them in the suitcase. As she walked back her eyes caught site of something on her bedside table. It was a picture in a frame. Valica picked it up and looked at it.
The picture was that of her seventh birthday. she was standing on a chair blowing out the candles on her cake. Her two brothers were in the back around. As usual Richard was making bunny ears over Williams head. But the one other person that stood out was that of a man. A young man possibly in his mid thirties. It had to have been Father, before he had changed. It gave her such a surprise to actually find it. Here it was right next to her and she hadn’t even noticed it before. As she looked at the picture her eyes went back to the man beside her. Once again tears welded up in her eyes. She then took the picture, frame and all and held it to her heart.
“Oh Father! I wish you would come back to us.”, she said mournfully.
“Are you finished!?”, a farmiliar voice spoke out.
She turned around to see her Father standing in the doorway.
She sighed and put the picture down on the bed. “Almost Father.”, she said and went back top her packing.
Father walked into the room. The first thing he did was knock the framed picture off her bed. The he proceeded to shove articles of clothing into the suitcase. Valica watched as he went about packing up her cloths. He didn’t even bother to fold her dresses, just slammed them one on top of the other. Once all her cloths were packed he went into the bathroom. She could hear him throwing things about. The sound of something breaking was heard followed by his cursing.
Meanwhile Valica had picked up the discarded picture, placed it on top of her cloths and closed the suitcase. Father emerged from the bathroom with a small case and threw it on the bed.
“That should do!”, he said roughly. “Now Valica it is time to leave!”
“Yes Father.”, she responded quietly and grabbed the carry-on and wheeled it to of the room.
As Father left he switched off the lights. Valica took one more look at her room. A place she once spend many hours inside. Now it looked like a person with out a soul, blank and empty.
No word was spoken as he walked her to the main doors. Now was their a goodbye as the they opened into the outside world. Though he didn’t leave her with no words at all. for just as she was leaving he slapped an envelope into her hand.
“This should more then surfise for your needs!”
Valica opened it and found a measly two hundred dollars. She looked up at him as if to say, “This is all you will give me?”
Father said not a word but pointed the way out. Valica simply pocketed the envelope and walked out with her head hung low. She heard the doors close after her. Slowly she made her across the circle drive. Down the long driveway to the iron gates. With a sigh she took one more look back at the mansion, as if she would never see it again.

I've only read 2/5ths of it (I was distracted by the writing of my own fanfiction at the time) but I must be honest: I liked what I read. It's certainly a unique concept--a girl having to control her habits or risk severe punishment. When I've got more free time I'll read and comment on the rest.
