As for that whole "Wally being a weakling" part, and Nigel saving him from the bullies, well, ZERO made me think of something entirely possible: he could have originally been very weak, and always getting picked on. Perhaps Nigel saving him became the catalyst for him to toughen himself up, to ensure that wouldn't happen to him again. Either his KND training or his own motivation could have changed his personality into the tough kid, instead of him always being like that.

That's EXACTLY the kind of thing I DON"T want to happen.
Now, if say, Wally was a transfer student and the bullies went after him because he's small and new, but there were too many for Wally to take on alone, that'd be not only better, but more believable.
No one's personality could become that different, or that natrual, in only a few years, even as a kid.
Making Wally having once been a wimp woudl be a TOTALLY bad idea. He's already considered dumb, so would have NO redeeming features at all. Also, Wally has a natrual talent for the physical, particularly if it's violent and destructive (BREAKUP, he hit that right out of the park). It's more likely that he was always a tough guy for whatever reason.

I agree.
The bullies were probably bigger and older than Wally. Wally was, is and always will be a tough guy.

I think that there were probably more of them than he could handle, either because there were a LOT, or becuase he wasn't in the KND yet, so hadn't been trained to deal with large groups of older foes.
