Beauty and the Brit, Chapter One, Part One
Once upon a time, as all our tales begin, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind.
But then, one winter's night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away, but she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. He did not heed her warning.
And when he dismissed her again, the old woman's ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart, and as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast, and placed a powerful spell on the castle, and all who lived there.
Ashamed of his monstrous form, the beast concealed himself inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his twenty-first year. If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair, and lost all hope.
For who could ever learn to love a beast?

The sun broke over the horizon of the sleepy town. A lone girl, a book tucked under her arm, made her way up the hill. Her voice rang out sweetly. Little town, it's a quiet village Every day, like the one before Little town, full of little people Waking up to say... Bonjour! Sang various members of the town as the saw her, waving at her in passing as she nodded politely back. Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour!
Sighing, but still smiling, she watched the daily pageant of town life unfold before her, noting lyrically – There goes the baker with his tray like always The same old bread and rolls to sell Ev'ry morning just the same Since the morning that we came To this poor provincial town...
The baker interrupted her a moment. “Good morning, ‘belle’!”
Belle was not her name. It was a nickname, from the French word for ‘beauty’, that all the town seemed to enjoy calling her. Her real name was Rachel. But she never corrected them.
“Where are you off to?” The baker inquired.
Ecstatic that someone seemed to be taking an interest, for once, she responded “The bookshop! I just finished the most wonderful story, about a beanstalk and an ogre and...”
“That's nice...” Rachel fought the instinct to roll her eyes at him. He was not listening. “Marie, the baguettes! Hurry up!!” He called to his wife in the back.
Rachel faintly made out the sound of people singing. About her. But she didn’t pay attention. Just opened her book and started reading.
Look there she goes, that girl is strange no question Dazed and distracted, can't you tell?
These were the women of the village, who thought that young girls should be thinking only of young men. Especially that Patton fellow…
Never part of any crowd, one woman observed. Cause her head's up on some cloud added the barber, noting the way that Rachel was effectively managing to dodge the children running about, despite never looking up from her book.
No denying she's a funny girl, that Belle! The whole town was in agreement on that, at least.
End of Part one
