It is actually a pretty popular couple. Many people use this paring in 1/5, 3/4 stories.

2/86 doesn't work for me. There's very little proof. Besides, they're both crushing on other people.
The rabid 3/4 and 1/5 shippers--mostly the over-rabid ones on FF--use them as a couple because of PINKEYE. Well, I have to give them credit for pairing Hoagie up instead of making him a "fat loser loner" or pairing him up with (God forbid) Lizzie "because they're both FAT!!!111
Have you ever seen PINKEYE? 86 not only yells at Hoagie after he calls her "Toots", she punches him and throws him in the garbage can! "Toots! Hmph! I'd like to see him call me THAT again!"
And Hoagie only said that about 86 (that scene was from FUGITIVE, btw) because he didn't want her yapping at him or Wally...that's a compliment? I don't think so!
I think Hoagie likes 86 about as much as he likes Lizzie...not much.

yeah, she yells at him A LOT. i dont really like this, i like 4/86 better ;d to me this couple just doesnt work.

Well, she yells at him a lot.....but hey, she yells at every guy alot. Compared to what numbuh 2 gets, he actually has a pretty special place in her heart for him.
Like best-friends-ish or something.

Look, it's not that I am a rabid 2/5 shipper, it's just that 2/86 doesn't work. In fact the only ships with 86 that are 'seaworthy' are 4/86 (we've got honest-to-goodness proof) and 86/362 (the old slash favourite).
The 'toots' comment was just Hoagie trying to act like a suave, film-noir PI and her response left very little for interpretation. Indeed, you can take it as a truism: "If a girl yells at you, beats you up and shoves you in a garbage can, chances are, she's not really fond of you."

I did think about it. At some length. My conclusion, after I thought about it, is that there's no proof whatsoever for it and, furthermore, even if we thread impossibile waters and try and imagine it it simply doesn't pan out. Name one instance where Numbuh 86 showed any affection towards Numbuh 2 or vice versa. Aside from the 'toots' thing in PINKEYE (which is just Hoagie getting into character) there isn't a smidgeon. The best you could come up with is that 'she doesn't insult him quite as much as the other ones'. She beat him up and stuffed him in a garbage can for Heavens' sake! It's about as rational to support 2/86 as it is to support Kuki/Mr. Fizz[1]
[1] On my honour as a 2/5 Samurai if anyone so much as THINKS about it, there will be bloodshed. ;D

It happens. OK I'll compromise.....
2/86 is gonna be a teenhood thing. (She'll change, same as hoagie.) And then when they GROW up and become adults, they get to be 4/3 (I like THIS couple betters!), 86/60 and 2/5.
Fair enough?
