Well, seeing as how it's opening soon, I figured I should start a Hairspray discussion topic. Post any questions, comments or concerns about this muscial comedy.

I've heard the musical is pretty good, and the previews of the movie look really fun. If things go as expected, the dancing should be awesome. I'm definitly going to see it.
I do wonder how it will compare with the original non-musical movie (the movie the musical was based on). I do like that movie, but surprisingly have high hopes for this one. Surprising since most musicals these days suck.

It's got about 94% good reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.
'Nuff said. ;D

That's opening this weekend, correct? I'll have to see it next week.
I never go to opening weekend shows. Too many people.

Yes he is! That alone is worth seeing ;D I'm excited about this movie. I love anything musical-related anyway, but it does look fun. I think it'll be a 'feel-good' movie that basically... makes you feel good when you watch it. Yeah. ;D I plan on seeing it fairly soon - which is unusual for me since I very rarely see a movie when it's brand new!

Hello, people! I would just like to say that I saw Hairspray last night ;D (woulda told you earlier, but it's been busy here) And you know what? I LOVED it. Just about everyone was very well cast (even John Travolta - though my sister had a few nitpicks about the voice he used), particularly Nikki Blonsky in the lead. Which just goes to show that Hollywood really shouldn't be so nervous about casting newcomers in big roles. And I will be VERY disappointed if nobody in this cast wins at least Golden Globe for Best Actor/Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Plus, the soundtrack was, as expected, very catchy. I still have the urge to start singing "Good Morning Baltimore"...and not only is it almost 11:30, I don't even LIVE in Maryland. Anyway, I highly recommend this movie. Go see it!

Ah, good. I was going to see it yesterday, but I was reading.
I'm guessing it might make more sense if you've seen the original film, but it might also make die-hards very anal about it. Fortunately, I KNOW the storyline is a bit different for the musical version.
They wouldn't actually be ABLE to cast someone known as the lead in this movie. Hollywood girls aren't fat. A fat suit wouldn't look right or move the same way a real chub girl would. So they probably had a LOT of girls to pick from for the lead, so were able to choose the absolute best.

Everyone says it's great. However, I seriously dislike musicals, so I probably wouldn't like it.

WHEE!! I've seen it! I've literally just come back from the cinema, and... WOW. ;D The songs are fun and - as ABG has already said - catchy. The script was well-written and there were plenty of humourous lines for all the characters. The cast was amazing - I don't know how John Travolta managed to do those dance moves in that huge 'fat suit', yet he managed, and he made it look so easy! There was also quite a lot of action, mostly shown in dance form, and there really wasn't a dull moment. And you can guarantee coming out of that theatre in a great mood! That's the first time I've ever known an audience in a cinema to give a movie such an applause. It was SUCH a good atmosphere. John Travolta's line: "I know one or two things about men."

Overall I liked the movie, although there were a few changes that I didn't like. But I liked what they then did with the changes. For example, I didn't like the whole "Velma coming on to Wilbur," but I liked the exchange it breed: "I could do a fan dance with lettuce leaves and you'd still be obtuse!" "...I failed geometry..." "And biology, too!" Conversly, in "Without Love," I loved Link singing to a photo of Tracy (and having it sing along), but I didn't like that their separation made a mush of the lyrics in the bridge ("Trace, I wanna kiss ya!" "Let me out at the next toll" just doesn't work as well after that as "Then I can't wait for parole!") . In general, the thing I disliked the most was when a random lyric was changed, and not well. Especially in "Miss Baltimore Crabs," but the flashback made up for that ^_~ AND no Velma and Amber verse in You Can't Stop the Beat!! Seriously, you CANNOT do that big lead-up without going to their verse. Other than those nitpicks, I liked the film, and I want to see it again ^_^

I'm tempted to go see it again. In about an hour, actually. Hm... should I or shouldn't I?
