Hm. I don't think religion should be taught in school unless it's being taught from an academic perspective. Studying the bible and other religious texts not because you seek enlightenment or something, but because you want to understand the culture. Maybe.
And at my high school we said the pledge of allegiance. I just never said the "under God" part. And, on occasion, I don't say the pledge at all. I'm not an American. I'm a New Yorker. KTHX.

@re: KND in Catholic school
I can imagine there being a Papal Bull in fairly short order declaring the KND anathema. KND tends to be short on any kind of puffed-up authority, religious or secular. Which is awesome.
@re: dress code
As it happens in my school you could wear whatever you damn well please excluding beachwear, of course. They tried to float an idea of us having an uniform but the student union told the principal to take a running leap and he gave up the idea as unworkable. Clever.
@re: Religion in Schools
Nope. I'm all for teaching kids religion. No really. BUT after they are 18. Not before. Religion, any religion, is a powerful memeplex. Exposing children to such a virulent memetic infection before they can defend themselves and make a reasoned choice is nothing short of child abuse. After they are 18 and have been properly exposed to an arcane concpet called 'thinking for themselves' they are fair game and can make a choice for themselves what to believe.
Religion as an academic subject is, on the other hand, both fascinating and very cool. It should be required for everyone as so many things in both history and current affairs revolve around religion.
Here they tried to enforce a religion class (taught by a priest no less!) but I got out by threatening to sue them to the Supreme Court for violations of the Constitution. I claimed (rightly so) that my religious freedom was being impugned. At that point they pretty much shut up and let me go.
@re: Pledge Of Allegiance
May I mention, as a foreigner, that I find the American cult of state positively scary? Here we have the charming Slavic trait of distrusting the goverment as humanely possible and regarding every action by the same with a deep practiced cynicism.

I'd try and disuade you but the fact is, yes, it's going to suck. It's school. The grindstone of intelect.

Uh... I study in a private school, because public schools in the Philippines aren't very good. Unfortunately, we have a complete uniform policy, and when you look from afar, a whole bunch of the students look the same. Religion's also a class in my school, even back in kindergarden. The prospects of religion (Catholic, to be precise) got to me when I was a kid, but when I got to high school, a whole lot of my prespective changed. Now I see religion in a variety of angles. What saddens me is how Religion (in my school's system) feels like it's being force-fed into the student's minds. It's almost being hypocritical to me. And if it wasn't so darn biased, Religion class could be pretty good.

I went to public school because we don't have any others. It was fairly good.
As for your problem with religion class, well, I feel for you. I believe in freedom of conscience. Sadly, some religious people do not. Instead they indulge in indoctrination of helpless targets. I find that distasteful to the extreme.

@knd in Catholic school
They'd all fail religion. ;D I proudly failed one marking period in religion because I hated the old bat of a nun. (This was in Catholic high school.)
IMHO, all religious and sociopolitical viewpoints should be completely kept out of public schools. That's why we have CCD for public school Catholic kids. (My son is starting in a few weeks, and I went from 1st to 8th grade.)
@the American cult of state
Not everyone subscribes to that. I don't. And I don't trust the government. Never did. (I'm starting to believe that 9/11 may have been plotted by the government. Wouldn't surprise me in the least.)
