@religion and race I said a while ago that I'm not going to defend stupidity that's spewed by any "hot button" group. In fact, while I'm very religious myself, I send 0xFF clips of nonsense about fanatical religious followers all the time. Latest one being a woman in Florida who threw Holy Water on a yoga class, screaming, "This is evil" and "This is sinful"... Um, I was taught to respect others' religions. This is a perfect example of people making religion into the absurd. I take this kind of nonsense and chuck it right out of my mind after I read it.

@bbq pit I'm all for this. I'm not sure how often I'd frequent it myself, but I think it could...er...help? (Not sure if that's the right word, but there you go.) No more of this "thank goodness I'm civil or I'd tell you you're a terrible person" BS. I mean...you just said it, basically. I like to think that some people on this forum are self-aware - we know our flaws. Let's just get them out in the open if some people think that somehow it will be a soul-crushing tactic. The delusional better watch out, though.

@bbq Pit-
I've seen it in other forums, and sometimes they're quite fun to read.
I'm all for it then.
@this thread in general-
We went from "Yay! Earth-like planet!" to "Yanno, we should have a special place for flamewars... all in favor of a BBQ pit say "aye" "

Madame, you want to toss the idea onto the Staff Boards and see what kind of response it generates? I'd do it but my time is v. limited.

Yes, I'll put it out there. (I just got home from taking the kids to see their Grandma, which is why I didn't answer sooner.)
EDIT: Sorry, just saw the thread over there!

There was bound to be a planet out there that was "just right" since there are a zillion planets in the freaking galaxy.
As for religion, if it wasn't for the lives of people heavily revolving around religion, we'd have a higher level of technology.

Madame, I was honestly tempted to launch into a long, angry tirade against you. And if I was the barbarian you seem to think I am, that is exactly what I would have done. So with apologies to the forum at large: Bring it on. I'm a big girl and can take what you have to say. Sure, sure, we believe you. Especially those of us who remember thisRight, your such a "big girl" that you're pushing for a fight despite everyone else trying to keep the peace. You're such a "big girl" that you wormed your way into a mod position just so you could bully a bunch of kids. And you did that because you couldn't be bothered to fix the problems of your homelife and instead prefer to pretend everything is the fault of the "fangirls." Actually, this isn't maddening at all--its actually kind of funny. The Jellyfish wants to take on the Legendary James. And I'm thinking that before the day has passed your going to try to end the fight by threatening me with your mod powers. *Yawn. Leans up against a wall and eats a carrot, similar to Bugs Bunny* I have. With good results. There was no "platform" and if there was, it wasn't political. It was a straight-up answer to the common question of "why does this happen?" It wasn't my personal belief either--its fact, supported by documented evidence in the aftermath of other tragedies, and is pretty much common sense if you have any inkling at all of human nature. Just talking to you is proof that I'm correct. You are the exact type of person the Columbine and VT shooters hated. You are also the exact type of person who would want to kill aliens simply for not meeting your expectations (after all, you already want to lambast other humans for that very reason). As I said before: You couldn't handle me. No, now your projecting your own faults onto me. Funny, I can't think of another person who has ever had problems communicating with me (except for Scone's clique, and well, they were trying to start stuff). I love how you bring up the "7 Reasons 21st Century" debate as an example of my "bad behavior." Funny how that arguement ended with both my "opponents" realizing they had been in the wrong (one of them having done so after others agreed that skimming was bad, the other being shown proof that her anger was without a real cause). Then again, you also mentioned the Vietnam protests as an example of a civilized movement that worked (when said protests were neither civilized nor did they achieve any results except to get the protestors jailed or shot). When practicing revisionist history, please remember that the facts are online, for all to see. And if they see that your version of events contradicts the known facts--especially after you brag about what a historian you are--its going to make people think you're loopy (not that people already don't...) The liquid nebula allows for endless variations and gray areas. The coin pretty much decrees that everything is partitioned into neatly-defined moral absolutes. The coin is usually preferred by "Moral Authority" nutcases who want to force their beliefs on everyone. You know, people like you.Well, you're not. Why don't you show people some of your "Fangirls are so stupid, glad I'm not like that" statements? Not to mention, you wanted to ban anyone who was against taking down X-Rated Roleplay. Real open-minded, there. Whether he was real or not is totally irrelevent in the context of the original conversation, in which I was describing an ideal that people should reach for. When describing idealistic concepts, using idealistic fictional examples is not only perfectly natural, you pretty much have no choice--obviously if real people had reached that Ideal, it wouldn't be much of an Ideal anymore. Sherlock Holmes isn't a real person, yet detectives still use him as an idealistic model. Uncle Tom and Simon Lacree aren't real people, yet they were used as representative of why slavery sucks. Almost all of what we know of Jesus' history is romanticized fiction, and yet... well, I'm sure you get the point. *Sigh* Funny, a long time ago I told myself that you should never use examples when trying to make a point. Invariably people get so involved in picking apart the example that they end up missing the point. Thanks for reminding me.

Sure, sure, we believe you. Especially those of us who remember thisRiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. So you're going to use a silly case like that to prove what a big bully I am. Uh-huh. All I wanted was for people to stop bothering the fanartists. It's not such a bad thing to ask for, y'know. They have LIVES. I wanted to see what the "great and almighty James" had to say. OMG. That's not true at all. 0xFF and 1024 thought I would make a good mod, when a spot opened up. It did. I volunteered. A bunch of people "nominated" me. And there you go. This is beyond laughable and not true either. So my homelife isn't the best--guess what? I'm doing something about it.I'm a spineless jellyfish. That's news to me. Hmmmmm, last time I looked, I didn't have tentacles hanging off my transparent body. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. And you call yourself "Legendary James"? You're a legend in your own mind.Nope, not going to use my "mod powers", either. I have some integrity, y'know. Piffle. Well goody for YOU. It's still an irresponsible thing to say, whether it's your belief or not. Real sense of social responsibility there, eh? That's so off, it's not even funny. There's a post earlier in this thread that states what I would do. Geesh. I was laughing so hard after I read this, I spit out my coffee. Yeah? I won't even tell you the number of people who've told me quite the opposite. Do you even want to go there? I can pick out of couple of choice quotes from that one: It just seems that you want to just up everyone else in forum arguments. (Kind of ironic, considering what YOU just accused ME of, eh?) In fact, ALL you ever do here, James, is argue with people and bicker about the show itself. I read on your LJ that you didn't like KND. So why stick around?You, on the other hand, read only the first paragraph and then decided you knew what the entire thing was about and made a bunch of dismissive remarks that showed you really didn't know what you were talking about. That's as ignorant as dismissing a fanfic because it supports couples you don't like.You, on the other hand, have read precisely one article by this guy, nothing else, you don't even know his freaking NAME, and yet you're trying to convince us that he's some sort of emo mad-at-the-world goth. Your conclusion is based entirely on that you didn't like this article. That is not reasonable by any means.I find it rather disconcerting that you not only had such a huge knee-jerk reaction, but feel compelled to keep piping in with random "That guy's an emo freak" comments. Excuse my presumptuousness, but that reaction gives me the impression that something in the article was just a little too close to home for you.Here's a hint, Valerie: Instead of carrying yourself entirely on the strength of your PMS, why don't you try actually THINKING? It's not that hard, and you'll be able to come up with something a little more meaningful then "OMG this guy made a lame commenr LOL LOSER!" You are so full of yourself, it's pretty sad. I don't need to convince anyone that you are, based on those paragraphs alone. There's a LOT more of them--that would probably fill a whole forum. How do you know they weren't civilized? You weren't there. I wasn't there, either, but I studied this stuff in college. You probably got your information from one of those uber-biased websites you're always reading. HAY GUYS, not only am I a jellyfish, I'm loopy! Yay! *dances around* Oh, so now I'm a "Moral Authority" nutcase. Sheesh. Anyone who knows me well knows I'm the exact opposite of that--I have a VERY strong distaste for the religious right and religious nuts of any kind. I'm also extremely apolitical. My God, you're twisting my words around again. That's no surprise to anyone who's been on this forum over a year. Anyone who's read my LJ knows I get annoyed by the more extreme fangirl. Not ALL fangirls. Extreme ones. You know, the ones you yourself were bitching about in this LJ entry? Here's some choice quotes from that: But worse than that is just how... f---ing romance-obsessed those people are. I mean geez, there are aspects to the show outside of the romance, but those are barely ever discussed and when they are it's usually a repeat topic or something with an easy answer ("Are the DC siblings?" "Well let's see... they have different skin colors...")
But back to the big problem: You know what? Couple-shipping is stupid, and being this obsessed with it is scary. Calling yourself names like "3/4lover" or "NigelAbbyfan", having sigs and avatars showing your couple and declaring "this is love," writing fanfics where the main advertising point is that they feature a certain couple, and god forbid, making web pages... that's just too much.Wow. I actually feel a lot better after having typed all that. Anyway, I'm gonna consider taking a hiatus from the forum, at least until I have the patience to deal with the fangirls or have something worthwhile to contribute.Those words speak for themselves. As for taking down the X-rated section, I was only going to ban people if they started flamewars and caused a huge ruckus over the issue. That didn't happen. So, no one was banned. Sheesh, and you were all for it going down! This is getting past the point of boring and into the realm of extremely annoying. Stop trying to defend this lame video game character that I've never heard of and don't care about. James, this is already overlong, so I'm just going to end this with these points: You're narcissistic, egotistical, delusional, and you change your mind about a kazillion times a day. Please, for your own sake, get out of your insulated little world and get some kind of job and TRY to integrate into society JUST A BIT, even if you hate it. It might do you a world of good.

The Jellyfish wants to take on the Legendary James. Okay, I didn't want to get involved, but I just can't help myself. These are the two funniest things I've read in a long, long time. Thank you, James, for making my day.

Actually, this isn't maddening at all--its actually kind of funny. The Jellyfish wants to take on the Legendary James. And I'm thinking that before the day has passed your going to try to end the fight by threatening me with your mod powers. *Yawn. Leans up against a wall and eats a carrot, similar to Bugs Bunny* Having been linked to this monstrocity of a thread by the lovely Nella, I've been politely keeping my distance, laughing into my sleeve at the sweeping statements of self-proclaimed "genius" amid the more or less logical trains of thought here. But this... oh, this. I must come out of hiding for this. I want to take this post, frame it in an aluminum plaque and hang in on my office wall for me to giggle at throughout the day. I - and everyone else who is online at the moment - cannot stop laughing at the sheer incredability of these claims, but moreso at the fact that you actually believe them. Just.... just... what. Wow. I am fairly certain that I will never see a funnier, more ridiculous post here forevermore. Unless you beat your own record. I'm rooting for you, James... you're our Olympic starter; go for the gold and make us laugh. As a half-assed justification, like Nella, I have little desire to get in the middle of this arguement, and while I feel that 0xFF and Hoagie's Gal have you more than handled, I can't help but throw in my two cents in light of the fact that you insist on belittling some of the more capable people here in order to fluff your own ego. I seriously think that the above statement summarizes your mindset for the entirety that I've had the (dis)pleasure of interracting with you. Oh, James Sir James, Bugs Bunny Esquire.... please return to your fantasy cartoon world that revolves around your legendary genius as you galavant among the pre-teen forum-goers, fighting the good fight and revolutionizing the land as the fantasy ideal "Real Man" that you seem to think you embody. In short, props to Hoagie's Gal and 0xFF for somehow making sense of the mystical logic of Jamesland, and all I can say to you is: MOAR PLZ. (PS, Ironic that you of all people are insulting the "lifestyles" of those who actually go to school / work / have made a family, Y/Y? Not everyone outside of Jameslands' lives revolve around fandom... don't discrimate against us! ) ~Regan PS on a non-Jamesland note: It's a great day... for science! Seriously, guys, earth-like planet? Sperm from bone marrow? How excited are we? >XP

@regan
Very excited. These days it's just the science news that keeps me sane. Well sane-ish.
@james
Now, seeing as your pseudo-flame wasn't directed at me I'll step back. However I will address several points where I think my comments are warranted. Or where I couldn't resist sniping.
Sorry, did I just see you cast aspersions at the forum's selection of mods? I sure do hope you have some hefty evidence of foul play as well as a convincing explanation why you didn't say something earlier.
Or was it simply a poorly flung insult?
Yep, James. You sure are a legend. Only one of those grim Teutonic ones where everyone dies at the end. And then the world comes to an end. Yup. That's you. Götterdämmerung James.
Oh and Jamesy old bean? Jellyfish sting.
Only not nearly as cool. More like a cheap off-brand knockoff of Bugs Bunny. With myxomatosis.
Edit by MHG: Myxomatosis is a condition characterized by the presence of myxomas in the body--specifically a severe virus disease of rabbits that is caused by a poxvirus (species Myxoma virus of the genus Leporipoxvirus) transmitted by mosquitoes; has been used in the biological control of rabbits especially in Australia. (Merriam-Webster)
And the stupid metaphor...
No. Too easy.
No they don't. Sherlock Holmes is a great fiction character -- I'm quite the aficionado -- but he's no model to base detective work on. His deductive (incidentally, what he's doing is properly termed induction but never mind) insights are delivered to him by a host of artistic conceits and happy coincidences. You can't rely on that in a normal investigation. Further, what he does almost never makes it to court -- and that's a good thing too: nothing he furnishes matches up to legal requirements. Nor it should because he is a FICTION CHARACTER. If we wanted reality we wouldn't read fiction, now would we? It is reasonable to call upon some work of fiction to illustrate an idea or concept -- sort of as a shorthand. It's less than reasonable to invoke it as an acceptable model of behavior. Especially when the character in question is from a fairly obscure video game.
Just drop this line of argument: your invocation of Lord British's performance of a rather ancient just ruler stunt is such a minor faux pas that it scarce deserves noting especially contrasted to the epic majesty of the bit about the jellyfish.
We seem to have conflicting memories of that thread. Happily the internet remembers all our past blunders and enables us to recall them with perfect clarity. Quite a boon to the Real Man, always on the lookout for some criticism, isn't it.

Guys, I think this really needs to end. Whatever further comments need to be made will go to the "BBQ Pit", as soon as it's made. Regan, Scone, and Nella, props to you guys for supporting the logical in this post. And kudos to Regan for her well-thought-out post. Much much LOVE to FF for the best line in this whole mess: "Oh and Jamesy old bean? Jellyfish sting." Damned right they do. And they hurt like hell. (Plus you have to love the use of "old bean". You can just SEE FF saying it with glee in his eyes.) ;D Jamesyland gives me a huge headache. It wasn't easy for me to make some kind of sense out of what he wrote. That's also why I decided to leave Jamesyland. I'm sorry I got involved with it in the first place. WTG, me! Yay! So bye-bye to this absolutely insane thread. Wow, I think this is THE most insane one we've had since I joined, anyway.
