I thought this would be fun, and a thread I would visit almost constantly. Discuss any movies, whether it be still in theatres or on DVD already. Preferably movies just coming out in theatres, so that recommendations can be provided, knowing whether it's worth spending ten seventy-five for.
My recommendation to people is the Mist. Although it had one of the bleakest endings in cinematic history, it was still awesome. And underrated.

You an recommend old movies, too.
By old, I mean stuff from over 50 years ago. I love those things. I'm watching Susan Slept Here right now. A cute little comedy about a May/December romance between Debbie Reynolds (Susan) and Dick Powell (Mark Christopher).
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir with Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney is adorable, too.
As for scarier stuff, Halloween, Halloween 2, and the original Carrie are some of my favorites.

Everyone should watch A Mighty Wind. It's like This is Spinal Tap, but about folk music. And ten times funnier, for real.

Just saw No Country for Old Men. Great movie, but weird. If you're not familiar with the Coen Brothers, you will be taken aback, and probably still will be if you are.
Started watching Superbad last night. Absolutely hilarious. I'll finish it later tonight.

Carrie was cool. I also liked Cujo. That movie was creepy oO; because it could actually happen.
Last movie in Theatres I saw was American Gangster and as I look back on watching it I really, actually enjoyed watching it. It's lengthy but it's really good. It's about a cop hunting down a drug dealer. That's really all there is to know.
I also liked Transformers. I saw it three times in theatres... -cough-

I saw Hairspray in theaters twice. Then watched it three times when I got it on DVD.
I should watch that again...
The original movie is fun, too. Both storylines are roughly the same, but they play out differently. Both are worth watching and awesome.

Hairspray was so much fun. I like the original more, though. Can't beat the Beatnik scene. ... But Amanda Bynes was awesome in the remake... but Jerry Stiller is .... my favourite actor.... I know he's in the remake, too... but a minor part.... and..... -shrugs- I liked them both too. XD

I almost fell asleep during Superbad. The film's too glorified. It's about some guys trying to get alcohol for a party. I'm not one for the silly, pointless films, so I really didn't enjoy it.
Hairspray was pretty terrible. It didn't even have its original music. Plus, it apparently didn't do so well, that being the reason why it was released on to DVD so quickly. Zac Efron, through my point of view, is completely, unreasonably overrated. I'm not into modern day musicals. Plus, in a way, it ripped off Grease. If you haven't yet noticed, take a look at the title. Grease? Hairspray? Hair products? Talk about a lack of originality. Then again, I'm not familiar with whether the film itself was based on some broadway in earlier years, before Grease.
The original Carrie was great, I agree. Not perfect, but very good. Same goes for American Gangster, despite Zaillian's lack of creativity with some parts of the script.
Since I feel bad for its sudden, rapid decline in popularity, I'm going to recommend the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy. I know, I know.. it isn't undervalued by the public. Still, I think the critics were a little harsh on the film, especially about the length. Those who haven't seen the third, you've possibly heard that it was too lengthy. Really, it was necessary, being the final movie and all. Kind of like INTERVIEWS needs to be lengthy to wrap it all up. Also, Bill Nighly is astounding. I don't recommend you watch the third without having first watched (and paid attention to) the first and second. If you do, then you will be seriously confused, and, other than the great action sequences, the hilarious Johnny Depp, and the amazing Bill Nighly as Davy Jones, will probably not get a bit of enjoyment from it.
Yeesh. Feels good to get that off my chest. I'm happy for Verbinski and Bruckheimer. Despite the fact that their hopes went a little too high when making the second and third, supposedly presuming that they were making a new Lord of the Rings trilogy, they had a good five years with this.
Wow. I just realized. Pirates lasted almost just as long as the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, almost at the same time as well. Neat. ^^

Goldie, Hairspray wasn't a musical to begin with. It was just a movie. A movie made into a musical made back into a movie. Of course they're going to change some things. Things ALWAYS get changed. Doesn't mean it isn't a good movie.
And while I agree Zac is overrated, it was pretty good in Hairspray.
As for saying it ripped off Grease... *smacks Goldie upside the head* Just because you don't like it is no reason to start hurling accusations.

Superbad lived up to it's name.... I watched it and laughed and then... looking back at when I saw it.... it sucked.
POTC I never saw... no interest to. Probably because Johnny Depp isn't my favourite actor at all. He was great in What's Eating Gilbert Grape, but Leonardo D'Caprio was even better in it.

The first one is a really incredible movie. My favorite of the three.

Well, Stardust just came out on DVD which made me estatic. I absolutely adore Neil Gaiman and his work! Also, I am Legend was fantastic. . .I really want to see it again in theaters. My friends, my little brother and his friends and I are going to see Alvin and the Chipmunks tomorrow night and I'm really looking forward to that.

Yeah, on Grease/Hairspray, other than the names, there's no resemblance. I mean, for one thing, Grease is set in the 50's, and Hairspray is the 60's. And the plots are just completely different.
Speaking of movie musicals, I saw Sweeney Todd this evening, and overall I thought it was okay, but (and I hate to say it) there was just too much Johnny Depp! Or rather, not enough Alan Rickman. But the song By the Sea ended up being hilarious, so there you go.

That's out already? O.o
As for the movie, well, the Judge guy isn't in the play too ften. There's a reason it's called Sweeny Todd.

Hey, i just saw Sweeney Todd tonight, too (...and I'll see it again next Sunday), and I LOVED it. So what if Alan Rickman doesn't have more screentime than Johnny Depp? I thought it was well-cast, and I'm AMAZED at the cast's singing abilities, considering many of them were untrained and singing Sondheim songs, for crying out loud. As an added bonus, the art direction was fantastic, and only the songs I didn't care much about were cut out.
Definitely not for the squeamish, though, what with the gallons and gallons of blood and all...
